Total potential ESOP wealth in India stands at INR 14.2 lakh crore! That’s 22% of India’s mutual fund industry AUM — and more than twice the PMS industry’s AUM. Let that sink in. HDFC Bank alone created INR 5,282 crore of ESOP liquidity in 2024 — twice as much as India’s entire startup ecosystem did that year. There are 3 different funds & these are their 5 year CAGR. Fund 1: 25.5% Fund 2: 17.2% Fund 3: 23.01% If you had invested ₹1,00,000 in each of them 5 years back, their values today would be Fund 1: ₹3,11,825 Fund 2: ₹2,21,125 Fund 3: ₹2,81,625 So clearly Fund 1 is the winner here. But in reality for a person who is working , the investment doesn’t stop with one single tranche. Most of them would be doing regular SIP. Let’s say the person did a ₹10,000 SIP for a period of 5 years (60 months). The value of ₹6,00,000 today would be. Fund 1: ₹9,81,519 (19.8%) Fund 2: ₹11,73,819 (27.2%) Fund 3: ₹11,79,769 (27.4%) The results are surprising right? How did a fund that gave the highest returns in 5 years underperform when the investment mode changed from lumpsum to SIP? The answer lies in consistency. Fund 3 has consistently generated good returns across all timeframes like 3 months, 1 year & 3 years, leading to better value for it's customers. While on the other hand, the fund 1 had best returns in the initial couple of years and was followed by poor performance post that. This lead to SIP not doing well. This is a reason why we don’t look at CAGR numbers & instead choose annual performances. I would recommend you to see how investments at various entry points have performed. HNIs often buy expensive art and wine collections thinking they are diversifying, but end up stuck with assets they cannot sell when they need cash. After working with high-net-worth families, I have noticed a pattern. People who are disciplined with traditional investments often become irrational with alternatives. They buy ₹50 lakh paintings, vintage wine collections, and rare watches believing these assets will outperform markets. Years later, they find themselves holding illiquid collections that are difficult to sell for anywhere near the purchase price unless the items are truly investment grade with strong secondary market demand. The main risks: 1. Illiquidity when you need cash A ₹2 crore art collection might be valued at ₹3 crores on paper, but finding a buyer quickly is tough. Auctions take months and charge up to 25% in commissions; private sales can be even slower. 2. Dealer influence and inflated expectations Sellers highlight selective success stories while downplaying costs. Transaction fees, storage, and insurance quietly erode any potential gains. 3. High ongoing costs Vintage wine requires climate-controlled storage (₹2,000+ per month in India). Art needs insurance, restoration, and controlled display. Over time, these expenses compound and eat into appreciation. When can alternatives make sense? - You already have substantial liquid wealth in traditional assets. Alternatives should be no more than 5 to 10 percent of your portfolio. - You genuinely enjoy and understand the category. Buy art because you love it, wine because you drink it. Financial upside should be secondary to personal enjoyment. - You can afford to lose the entire investment without it affecting your lifestyle or core financial goals. True diversification comes from spreading risk across sectors, and asset classes, not from owning illiquid collectibles that only create the appearance of sophistication.
