To return the deported gods was important on diplomatic-political, religious and social level. The paper gives an overview of the returns of divine statues as attested in Mesopotamian sources of the first mill. BCE.

A Sketch of the Life of the Golah in the Countryside of Babylonia
Hebrew Bible and Ancient Israel

The focus of this contribution lies on the intermediaries between the Babylonian (and Persian) royal administration and those of the low-profile captives in the countryside who used their chances to start individual careers. As a new ap-proach, we want to study the extra-biblical textual material from Babylonia with methods of social behavior studies and environmental anthropology, which offer some new theories of forced migration and involuntary resettlement. This new methodological approach on the Babylonian deportees clarifies the terminology and sheds new light on the aim and impact of forced displacement and involuntary resettlement of populations in the neo-Babylonian and Persian empires, on the risks and options which had to be faced and handled.

The studies, written by international experts in the field, cover both grammatical and semantic aspects of the language of Qohelet, but also deal with exegetical problems in the book and with the position of the book and its language in its wider context. In this respect, the volume forms a fitting tribute to this Qohelet-scholar to whom the scholarly world owes much. It will be a welcome source to all those interested in the fascinating book of Qohelet and in Israel's wisdom literature in general.

Markus Isch (University of Bern) for proof-reading the manuscript. My sincere thanks also go to the editors of this volume -Profs.
