Predicting Marital Dissolution Using Data from Both Spouses Chao-Chin Lu Department of Sociology ... more Predicting Marital Dissolution Using Data from Both Spouses Chao-Chin Lu Department of Sociology Doctor of Philosophy The present research studies marital dissolution using data from both spouses from the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH) and uses the method of multiple imputation to handle missing data. Role theory and another four approaches (social exchange theory, stake theory, gender perspective and heterogeneity perspective) are used to make a methodological argument why using data from both spouses is necessary to study marital stability. Five data sets are imputed and there are 3,777 observations in each imputed data set. Main research findings are as followed. First, the model fits of the data from both spouses on marital dissolution are significantly better than the model fits of the data from one spouse only; therefore, gathering perceptual data from both spouses is necessary to understand marital dissolution. A natural language processing tool named the SIG extractor was developed to identify and extract elements from narrative medication instructions to compute average weekly doses (AWDs) for disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs. The goal of this paper is to evaluate the performance of the SIG extractor. This agreement study utilized Veterans Health Affairs pharmacy data from 2008 to 2012. The SIG extractor was designed to extract key elements from narrative medication schedules (SIGs) for 17 select medications to calculate AWD, and these medications were categorized by generic name and route of administration. The aim of this study was to validate the natural language processing (NLP) tool we developed-which extracts spirometric values and responses to bronchodilator administration-against expert review, and to estimate the number of additional spirometric tests identified beyond the structured data. All patients at seven Veteran Affairs Medical Centers with a diagnostic code for asthma Jan 1, 2006-Dec 31, 2012 were included. Evidence of spirometry with a bronchodilator challenge (BDC) was extracted from structured data as well as clinical documents. NLP's performance was compared against a human reference standard using a random sample of 1,001 documents. This study evaluates nonunion rate and risk factors for reoperation after STT arthrodesis in the Veterans Affairs Department patient population. The purpose of our study was to assess the long-term nonunion rate following STT arthrodesis and to identify factors associated with reoperation. Methods: The national Veterans Health Administration Corporate Data Warehouse and Current Procedural Terminology codes identified STT arthrodesis procedures from 1995 to 2016. Frequencies of total wrist arthrodesis (TWA) and secondary operations were determined. Univariate analyses provided odds ratios for risk factors associated with complications. We propose a novel iOPEN (integrated OPtical EtherNet) architecture to support dynamic reconfigur... more We propose a novel iOPEN (integrated OPtical EtherNet) architecture to support dynamic reconfiguration of lightpaths between Ethernet switches and study the network control and operation algorithms and their performance. The iOPEN network maintains the Ethernet frame forwarding features and takes advantage of current available optical network technologies, and extends the Ethernet network technology and services to the metro area. The frame forwarding mechanisms and network topology configurations adapt to changes in traffic conditions for guaranteed QoS and efficient resource utilization. The simulation results from simple network configuration indicate that the iOPEN architecture dynamically reconfigures logical topology of the Ethernet switches in response to traffic changes and utilizes resources more efficiently.

In this study, gold nanorods were firstly found to exhibit a tremendously higher catalytic activi... more In this study, gold nanorods were firstly found to exhibit a tremendously higher catalytic activity towards luminol chemiluminescence (CL) than spherical gold nanoparticles. More importantly, ultra-trace aminothiols can cause a great CL decrease in the gold nanorod-catalyzed luminol system by the formation of Au-S covalent bonds on the ends of gold nanorods. Aminothiols can occupy the active sites of gold nanorods, and further interrupt the generation of the active oxygen intermediates. Other biomolecules including 19 standard amino acids, alcohols, organic acids and saccharides have no effect on gold nanorod-catalyzed luminol CL signals. Moreover, in order to evaluate the applicability and reliability of the proposed method, it was applied to the determination of glutathione in the cell extracts of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Adults with at least one biologic claim between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2011, were included. Evidence of enrollment in the VHA was required from 365 days before (pre-index) to 360 days after (post-index) the date of the first biologic claim (index date). The proposed algorithm demonstrates similar linewidth tolerance to the best feed-forward CPE reported to date while the computational complexity is at least three times lower compared with other simplified feed-forward CPE techniques.

The method considers isolated rods in cladding, with three layers structure: higher index in the core, lower-index depressed layer and silica cladding. Good consistency is found between the results of the approximate analytical method and those from accurate numerical simulations.

A Novel Method for non-contact measuring diameter parameters of wheelset based on wavelet analysis

It is very important to measure the diameter parameter of wheelset for the safety of trains. The optoelectronic method is introduced and can dynamically measure the diameter parameter. Fast Fourier transform and wavelet analysis methods are used to denoise the detected signals of wheelset diameters. The results show that the wavelet analysis provides a much better way of denoising of the signals compared with the fast Fourier transform method. Comparisons of the diameter parameter measurements with the manual apparatus and the optoelectronic system are presented. The measurement accuracy of diameter parameter was within 1.0 mm. The root-mean-square error of the diameter is 0.51 and 0.15, respectively. The accuracy meets the measuring requirement of diameter parameters on line and shows that the system has better repeatability and reliability compared to the manual measurement.

Direct Heuristic Dynamic Programming for Damping Oscillations in a Large Power System

This paper applies a neural-network-based approximate dynamic programming method, namely, the dir... more This paper applies a neural-network-based approximate dynamic programming method, namely, the direct heuristic dynamic programming (direct HDP), to a large power system stability control problem. The direct HDP is a learning-and approximation-based approach to addressing nonlinear coordinated control under uncertainty. One of the major design parameters, the controller learning objective function, is formulated to directly account for network-wide low-frequency oscillation with the presence of nonlinearity, uncertainty, and coupling effect among system components. Results include a novel learning control structure based on the direct HDP with applications to two power system problems. The first case involves static var compensator supplementary damping control, which is used to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the learning control performance. The second case aims at addressing a difficult complex system challenge by providing a new solution to a large interconnected power network oscillation damping control problem that frequently occurs in the China Southern Power Grid.

Algorithms for the design of WDM translucent optical networks

Due to the impairments in optical fiber transmission, regeneration is needed in certain intermedi... more Due to the impairments in optical fiber transmission, regeneration is needed in certain intermediate nodes for some lengthy lightpaths. This kind of optical networks is called translucent optical networks. Spare transceivers in the optical nodes can be used for regeneration. The problem of maximizing the number of established connections (NEC) in the translucent optical networks can be formulated as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) problem. This formulation can only be solvable for small networks but for large networks and large traffic matrix the MILP formulation is intractable. Hence an effective heuristic algorithm based on K-least-wavelength-weight-path routing and statistical method is proposed. For small networks, which can be handled by MILP, the results show that the heuristic algorithm also yields the optimal solutions in most cases. The ability of the heuristic algorithm to handle large networks makes it suitable for use in a route engine as well as in a network design tool.

The algorithm requires simple formulation, yields reasonably accurate results, and is efficient as needed for a design analysis; it is also applicable to any index-guiding regular structure/PCFs. The efficacy of our design tool has been verified with otherwise known solutions. Using this as a design recipe, we have realized PCFs with high birefringence characteristics.

With the MRBEM, the Helmholtz equation is converted into an integral equation using a series of higher order fundamental solutions of the Laplace equation. It is a much more efficient method to analyze the dispersion, birefringence and nonlinearity properties of PCFs compared with the conventional direct boundary element method (BEM).
