It was a pleasure to share data with our colleague Elena Govi to explore monocular 3D detection, an interesting topic for our future research. Stay tuned to know more about her research!
I had the privilege of attending ICCV 2025 in October. What an incredible week in Honolulu! 🏄♀️ 🌋 I was honored to co-organize the Women in Computer Vision Workshop alongside Aishwarya Jadhav, Supatta Viriyavisuthisakul, Ariana Bermúdez Venegas, Uma Mudenagudi, Chaitra Desai. A special thank to Arianna Bunnell, who helped us with the local organization. It was a truly rewarding experience that allowed me to connect with many talented women in our field. We also hosted a special mentorship dinner following the workshop to foster networking and collaboration. I want to extend my thanks to all attendees, oral presenters, and the brilliant keynote speakers: Angela Dai, Hilde Kuehne, Thu Nguyen-Phuoc, Gabriela Csurka. I also had the opportunity to present my poster, "Cross-camera Monocular 3D Detection for Autonomous Racing," at the DriveX Workshop. This work introduces a dataset and methodology for monocular 3D detection specifically designed for racing scenarios. This research was in collaboration with the Unimore Racing team, who recently competed in the AbuDhabi Autonomous Racing League 👏 #ICCV2025 #ComputerVision #WomenInComputerVision #AutonomousRacing #Research

Under the lights at Yas Marina Circuit, I watched six fully autonomous (not remotely controlled as I initially thought) race cars battle wheel-to-wheel at speeds exceeding 250 km/h. No drivers. No remote controls. Just pure AI making split-second decisions at the absolute limits of physics. 18 months ago, I discovered A2RL - the Autonomous Racing League - and since then, I’ve wanted to work with them to better understand their mission, what they are building, the actual technology and why they are working on this. Last weekend, this was all made possible as I joined the A2RL press trip for their second-ever race. When Germany’s TUM and Italy’s Unimore traded the lead through sweeping corners with less than a second between them, it was easy to forget these were algorithms, not athletes. And then you caught a glimpse of humans looking out onto the track, just waiting for the cars to make their next move, and you were swiftly reminded that the humans weren’t in control here. The Autonomous Racing League’s second season grand final wasn’t just spectacular - it was necessary. And understanding why requires rethinking what we mean by “testing” in the age of autonomous vehicles. And critically, it proved that we can develop autonomous systems without diminishing human achievement. The goal isn’t to replace drivers but to create tools that make transportation safer, more efficient, and more accessible. As autonomous vehicles slowly and carefully make their way from test tracks to city streets, initiatives like A2RL provide the platform where algorithms are forged under pressure. The technology emerging from these competitions won’t just make faster race cars - it will make the autonomous vehicles sharing our roads more reliable when they encounter their own edge cases at 50 kph on a rainy Tuesday morning. That’s why we’re racing robots. Not because it’s spectacular (though it is), but because competition accelerates innovation in ways nothing else can match. The spectacle is just a bonus. Although one final question I did have was whether this would be an interesting spectacle to watch, and it was. Full article link in the comments.

Autonomous racing is way more than just taking the pilot out of the equation. Sure, you might picture crazy speeds, tight corners, and bold overtakes. But let’s slow down for a second and look at what really makes all of this come alive: the people. It’s not just algorithms and AI. Behind every line of code and every sensor, there are real stories, different backgrounds, and one shared passion. A passion for trying new things, for pushing what’s possible in autonomy and in motorsport. There are frustrating days too. A sensor acting up, a bug that refuses to be fixed, a corner on the track that just doesn’t feel right, a crash 👀 But then there are the good days: the laughs, the high-fives, the moments where everything finally clicks. Those wins are what make it all worth it, no matter the challenges or the skepticism. We want you to know who’s really inside the car. It’s us. Since the beginning of my journey in autonomous racing (2021 in Indianapolis), I have competed in 8 races, without considering demos and events without a proper competitive part, and never won. Always reached the podium but never the top position, and being an extremely competitive person, I never accepted it. Software bugs, bad managerial decisions, hardware/engine failures, and bad luck/coincidences have been the reasons. Until the following race, I would always regret my decisions and ruminated on what I should have done differently to avoid the mistakes. This time is different; I am surely mentally stronger, but we also don't have anything to regret. We've been able to manage everything almost to the limit of our capabilities, but it wasn't enough. Before the race's start, I told the whole team to follow the race as if they were casual viewers, enjoying what they would watch without regrets or worries, because whatever the final result would be, which is not completely in our control, we should be proud of the performance we produced. The goal since the beginning was to compete against ourselves, improving our laptimes without hiding anything from the competitors, and in this, we did our best, always succeeding in it. While I did my best to prepare the team for every possible outcome, it is really hard to let the sadness and frustration pass for me. One thing is sure, I will not stop trying, and at every failure I will keep rising, becoming stronger and stronger because I am sure me and the team has everything needed to achieve our goals. Now it is clear to everyone, we are not aiming to beat the other teams but the best human drivers in the world. Be prepared because next time we will not give you any chance to catch us on track. I would like to thank the entire team Unimore Racing. Starting from our prof. Marko Bertogna for the complete trust he gave to me and the team, Alessandro Toschi, co-leader of the team with me, and Nicola Musiu, who, with me and Ale, have been in the team since 2021. The whole actual team: Davide Malvezzi Michele Pestarino Matteo Pini Giovanni Scapicchi Simone Bondi Giovanni Lambertini Matteo Villa Francesco Iacovacci Gabriele Chiesura Nicolò Vella Fausto Lupo Martina Rossi, and those who participated recently but left the team: Eugenio Mascaro Federico Sacco Pietro Musso Niccolò Enrico Marcati Francesco Prignoli, and the guys from Hipert for their support. Thanks also to our technical sponsors: MegaRide - applied vehicle research Claytex Congratulations to team TUM for the first position, FTM Institute of Automotive Technology TUM, and the whole grid for the amazing performance: Technology Innovation Institute PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team Kinetiz FR4IAV - French Autonomous Racing Rapson Code19 Racing TGM Flyeagle Last but not least, the ASPIRE and AbuDhabi Autonomous Racing League, in particular: Alexander Winkler Nicola Palarchi Andrea Maselli Josh Roles, MIET Yashovardhan Katare MSc MIET Lisa C.

Watch the view and the spontaneous emotions of the public on the main grandstands during our overtake!
Postdoc @ MBZUAI . PhD in AI . Ex Meta GenAI, MPK . I make Deep Learning models responsible and safe
Congrats to the Technical University of Munich for the win, but a huge shout-out to Unimore Racing! 🏎️ On Saturday, I had the chance to attend an incredible event organized by #A2RL at the iconic #YasMarinaCircuit in #AbuDhabi, where top teams pushed the limits of autonomous driving 🤖 . Six fully AI-driven cars put on an amazing show and, as a lifelong F1 fan, I can say it was something special. It was a roller coaster of emotions: the Technical University of Munich made the most of every opportunity and came out on top. Well deserved! But my biggest congratulations go to Marko Bertogna and the Unimore Racing team. Watching the race live, it was clear how strong their car was. They pulled off the only overtake of the entire event — and did it beautifully — then started opening a huge gap fast. You should all be incredibly proud of what you achieved. You showed what it truly means to have racing in your DNA and to come from the heart of the most iconic Motor Valley. For me, Unimore Racing were the real heroes of the night, and I’m sure they’ll prove their strength on the track again soon. Time will tell. #AutonomousDriving #AutonomousRacing #A2RL #YasMarinaCircuit #AbuDhabi #UAE #TUM #UNIMORERacing AbuDhabi Autonomous Racing League (You can hear my excitement in this video clip from the main grandstands!)

Despite the frustration, and the sense that it definitely could have been better managed, we are proud of the aggressive performance, of the close fight with TUM, and the autonomous system’s ability to push to and beyond human level pace. After the green light, our race began with strong pace, overtaking TUM early and maintaining the lead despite pressure. On lap 12, while lapping for the second time the last car, the backmarker slowed unpredictably and failed to follow the instructions to hold the outside line, forcing an adjustment that allowed our competitors to draw alongside and to gain the right of way by the current rules. With TUM on the inside and the slow car ahead our software tried to pass on the outside, but a sudden move by car #8 caused a collision that unfortunately ended our race. Our car could not have done much to avoid the crash. After qualifying first but losing to TUM in the sprint race, we promised then that in the Grand Finale we would have demonstrated not only to be the fastest but also more fierce during the overtakes, and we did. Shout out to Technical University of Munich for the win, as well as to all the other teams that took part in this event. Together we showcased what we are capable of, opening the path to a bright future ahead. We can’t wait to be back on track next year, stronger and hopefully luckier. 💪🏻 AbuDhabi Autonomous Racing League PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team Kinetiz Constructor University Code19 RacingRapson FR4IAV - French Autonomous Racing Technology Innovation Institute Fly Eagle TGMGP FTM Institute of Automotive Technology TUM Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia MegaRide - applied vehicle research Hipert HiPeRT-Lab Claytex #AutonomousRacing #AutonomousDriving #YasMarinaCircuit #A2RL #AutonomousAD #ADAW #ADAutonomousWeek #RaceToInnovate #AIOnTrack #AI #Innovation
