It is with great pride that I announce the closing of FunniFin - Financial Wellbeing's €850K funding round participated by CDP Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, Syscon Srl and Marco Costaguta. During university, I co-founded FunniFin with four friends. While three of us chose different paths, Lapo Nidiaci and Leonardo Capotosto decided to dedicate themselves fully to the journey 👏 Working on the other side of the table as a VC, I immediately advised that those not going full-time should transfer their shares to Lapo and Leonardo to ensure a clean cap table for future fundraising. However, Leo and Lapo kindly asked me to retain a small equity stake to support them with my network and advices. Today, my friends, former roommates and co-founders have completely transformed what started as a playful B2C project for financial education (FantaTrading) into a robust B2B solution with the same mission: improving financial literacy, which remains alarmingly low in our country. I’m incredibly happy to have the chance to witness and contribute to the growth of a startup from the inside. It has given me a whole new perspective—very different from what we discuss on paper. Leonardo and Lapo have faced countless challenges, embraced pivots, and never gave up. Now, they’ve finally found the elusive product-market fit. FunniFin helps and educates employees to save money through gamification, while also offering workshops and one-on-one sessions with financial advisors. First of all, congratulations to P101 for an excellent report. Secondly, thank you for not confusing accelerators with incubators! Thirdly, and predictably, I totally agree with the importance that universities have in promoting and improving entrepreneurial talent. I would add that universities should also play specific roles; for example Bocconi doesn't really need to work on tech transfer, but it does need to work on entrepreneurial skills, business acumen and building sustainable businesses. Engineering universities have the know-how linked to tech transfer on the other hand. At B4i - Bocconi for innovation a third of the applications we receive come from Bocconi students and alumni, about 10% from Politecnico di Milano, about 5% from Politecnico di Torino and then a long list of applications from universities from all over Italy and Europe. When we choose deeptech companies, their technology has mostly already been developed and they have high(ish) TRLs; what we can do for them is linked to building a business around that technology.
