AI is transforming the way we ask questions and find information. As we expand AI Mode to the EU, people can ask more questions, get helpful links to the web, and discover new content.
Beyond this launch, we understand that publishers have questions about how AI is impacting them. We care passionately about the health of the web, and just as we have for more than 20 years, we will continue to work closely with the news industry through the AI era.
Here is a snapshot of what we are already doing across Europe:
𝗗𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲: For more than two decades, we have helped publishers grow their audience and revenue through platforms like Google Search, YouTube, and our ad platforms. Our new AI features in Search are built to highlight the web, keeping links prominent and improving the user experience. We continue to send billions of clicks to all types of publishers and creators.
𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝘀: We pay over 1300 publications in Europe through Google News Showcase, our online news experience and licensing program, as well as over 5000 publications for Extended News Previews (ENP) under the European Copyright Directive. We’re funding new AI solutions through Journalism AI, supporting 35 projects across 22 countries to strengthen local journalism. We are also entering into agreements with publishers in Europe to explore and experiment with new types of product experiences designed specifically for the era of AI.
𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜: We're piloting experimental AI experiences to help publishers innovate. In NotebookLM, we are working with top publishers, like the Economist, to create featured notebooks that bring their journalism to life in new, interactive ways. We also provide AI-powered tools like Pinpoint, our research tool for journalists.
𝗨𝗽𝘀𝗸𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄𝘀𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗔𝗜: Through our Google News Initiative programs and key industry partnerships with FT Strategies and Journalism AI, we provide thousands of news partners with business training to build sustainable revenue models and strengthen their AI literacy. This year alone, we have trained over 9,000 news professionals through these initiatives in EMEA.
As people gravitate to new AI experiences, we will continue to innovate and update our products to meet user preferences. At the same time, we will continue to work closely with the news industry, as we have always done.
