Arrivano i Picchiatelli
Allo scoppio della Seconda Guerra
Mondiale, la Regia Aeronautica aveva in
carico un solo Gruppo da Bombarda-
mento a Tuffo: il 96°, che aveva la sua
base sull’isola di Pantelleria. I Gruppo
era dotato di velivoli SIAI SM 85, che si
rivelarono ben presto assolutamente i
datti al ruolo operativo che avrebbero
dovuto ricoprire,
Messo alle strette, lo Stato Maggiore
Aeronautica, nella persona del Generale
Pricolo, decise di ricorrere alla collaborazio-
ne delfalleato tedesco. La scelta del velivo-
lo cadde ovviamente sullo Ju 87 Stuka, per
il quale fu autorizzata dallo stesso
Feldmaresciallo Goring una fornitura di
uindici velivoli entro il mese di luglio del
1940, una ulteriore per quindici velivoli
entro agosto ed il restante lotto di ventidue,
entro il successivo mese di settembre.
Sarebbe seguito un altro ordine per cin-
‘quanta Ju 87, in data 13 settembre 1940.
I piloti ebbero il primo contatto con
o Ju 87 nel mese di luglio 1940. Questo
avvenne in Austria, presso la Stukaschule
2, dislocata a Graz-Thalerhot. Furono sele-
jionati per partecipare al corso di qualifi-
cazione sulla nuova macchina, piloti pro-
venienti dal 96° Gruppo B. a T,
(ombardamento a Tuffo), dal 5° Stormo
‘Combattimento e dagli Stormi Caccia 3°,
51°53".
Picchiatellis of Regia Aeronautica
With the outbreak of the Second World
War, the Regia Aeronautica had only one
dive bomber unit: the 96th Gruppo, based on
the island of Pantelleria. The unit was
equipped with SIAI SM 85s, that soon
revealed themselves absolutely unfit to the
operational role that they would have had to
Put with its back fo the wall, the Air
Staff in the person of generale Pricolo, deci-
ded to address to the collaboration of the
German alty. The choice of the aircraft felt
obviously on the Ju 87 Stuka, for which toas
allowed, by Hermann Goring, a supply of
fifteen aircraft within the month of July
1940, fifteen more aircraft within August
and the remainder batch of twenty-two,
within the following month of September.
(On 13 September 1940 it rwould have fol-
lowed an order of fifty additional Ju 87.
The pilots had their first contact with
the Ju 87 on July 1940. This happened in
Austria, at the Stukaschule 2, based on the
airfield of Graz-Thalerhof. The selected
pilots came from the 96th Gruppo B. a T.
(Bombardamento a Tuffo), from the 5st
Stormo Combattimento and from the Storm
Caccia 3rd, 53rd and Sst.
‘The training course was completed on
15 August 1940, when the first Ju 875 pilo-
ted by Italian personnel, took off from Graz,
heading for Campoformido. The formation II corso di addestramento ebbe termi-

Bifettuata una sosta per rifornimento sui
campi friulani di Udine e Campoformido e
su quello di Forli, nella serata dello stesso
giorno i velivoli giunsero alla loro meta:
Yaeroporto di Ciampino-Sud, nei pressi di
Roma.
‘Al 96° Gruppo, basato a Cor
Sicilia, furono assegnate tredici machine,
distribuite tra la 236 e la 237° Squadriglia.

refuelling on the airfields of Udine and
‘Campoformido, and later of Forl, in the eve-
ning of the same day the aircraft reached
their final destination: the airport of
Ciampino-South, in the outskirts of Rome.
Thirteen machines were assigned to
the 96th Gruppo, based on the Sicilian air-
field of Comiso and shared between the
236th and the 237th Squadriglia. The Ju 87s
of the 96th Gruppo, renamed from now on
"Picchiatelli", made their debut against
English naval formations in the western side
(opp. area) of the island of Matta, without
