In Japan, one of the key programs under this initiative is "Mirai School," a career-education support program. This time, Sumitomo Corporation President and CEO Shingo Ueno himself visited his alma mater, Rokko Junior/Senior High School, to deliver a special class to about 1,000 students. 💡What is “Mirai School”? "Mirai School" is a career-education support program through which Sumitomo Corporation employees and officers visit educational settings across Japan to share their own experiences and views of work. The program aims to help junior and senior high school students recognize their own "power to shape the future" and give them opportunities to flourish in an era of constant change.   🧑🏫What matters most is “how you seize the opportunities that come your way.” Reflecting on his own career journey, Ueno told the students, "What is important is how you seize the opportunities that come to you by chance." He emphasized that curiosity and sincerity in engaging with others are essential to doing so. During the Q&A and roundtable session that followed, students posed sharp and insightful questions, and discussions covered a wide range of topics, creating a lively atmosphere. After the class, Ueno commented, "It was inspiring to learn about the younger generation’s ways of thinking and interests. The impact has been significant - annual cost savings are estimated at 1.2 billion yen, and within just nine months, the company has reduced more than 10,560 working hours each month across the organization. Employees who volunteered as “Copilot Champions” are taking the lead, fostering a culture where AI adoption is becoming second nature. Today, we’re highlighting the Forest Resources Business Unit, a team that is embracing change together. 👨💻Bridging IT literacy gaps With long-standing processes and varying levels of digital skills, the unit faced challenges. Copilot Champions stepped up with workshops, group sessions, and hands-on training. By sharing practical use cases and success stories, they created positive momentum that is fueling adoption across the team. ⏰How Copilot is being used in the Team ・Contract reviews and financial statement analyses that used to take several hours have now been streamlined, achieving over a 90% reduction in time. ・Research and analysis have also become faster, enabling quicker identification of industry trends and the development of new business hypotheses. Plans are underway to further streamline information sharing and build a more robust knowledge base. 📌The future with AI The time saved through increased efficiency is creating momentum for the team to focus on higher-value work. (“Shell”) for the global supply of oil country tubular goods (“OCTG”). A formal signing ceremony was held on October 14 in The Hague, Netherlands. For over five decades, Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Steel have been trusted suppliers of seamless OCTG products to Shell’s operating companies across more than 20 countries. This new agreement reflects this long history of collaboration and recognizes the comprehensive capabilities of both companies highlighting Nippon Steel’s consistent delivery of high-quality premium OCTG, alongside Sumitomo Corporation’s robust supply chain management services such as inventory control, maintenance and just-in-time delivery factored in this contracting decision. This agreement reaffirms the commitment of all parties to ensure a secure and reliable supply of OCTG to support Shell’s global operations. Over the next decade, the partnership will focus on enhancing the value of the offering by expanding the product portfolio, optimizing supply chain efficiency, and leveraging digital technologies to improve traceability and transparency. Leveraging the characteristics of short-wavelength infrared (SWIR), the system can detect and identify liquids such as water, oil, and chemicals in real time. It contributes to improving safety, productivity, and digital transformation (DX) in manufacturing sites. A patent application was filed in September 2025, and commercial sales are planned to begin in after August 2026.   𝗞𝗲𝘆 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 🔍 ・Detects even small leaks quickly and accurately ・Covers wide areas without physical contact ・Provides clear 3D visualization for easy understanding ・Reduces maintenance workload and equipment damage By utilizing SWIR 3D sensing, the system addresses challenges faced by conventional sensors. It will be introduced mainly in domestic semiconductor factories, with plans to expand to pharmaceutical, chemical, and global markets through Sumitomo Corporation’s network. The system supports stable plant operations and promotes the DX of leak detection, contributing to safer and more efficient production environments. This initiative marks a crucial step toward realizing the commercial flights of eVTOL (electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing) aircraft in the urban areas of Tokyo by 2030. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: ・A three-year programme starting from FY2025, with stages of desktop studies, demonstration flights and promotion of pre-social implementation. ・Flights will be conducted in the Tokyo Bay area and over river zones, envisaging access to the airport under a public-private partnership. ・We will focus on establishing the operational environment (including securing and maintaining take-off/landing sites and bases, and coordinating control and communication systems), providing operational support, and conducting evaluation and verification. ・Through this public-private collaboration, we aim to create a new transportation method using low-altitude airspace and provide new value to airports.   Sumitomo Corporation remains committed to contributing to the “Revolution in Urban Air Mobility” and shaping the future of mobility in Tokyo together with our partners.
