Uber testing program to match female passengers and drivers

This is a new safety feature that's already been tested in a few markets globally

Uber says it frequently sees women request to have the option to be picked up by a female driver, and now the company is rolling it out.

This is an expansion of the current Uber tech that lets female drivers set their preference towards picking up female passengers. Now passengers will also be able to select women drivers.

This is only rolling out in three U.S. cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit. However, since the previous driver-focused version is already live in 40 countries, including Canada, I expect that we’ll see it expand over the coming year.

For instance, when Uber launched the ability to let female drivers only chauffeur female passengers in Canada, it started in Hamilton, Kitchener-Waterloo, and London before rolling out to the rest of the country. It seems like Uber usually tests in three markets at a time.

Once the feature is live, female Uber users will be able to select an option called ‘Women Drivers’ when choosing a ride. You can also reserve these rides in advance. There will also be a softer preference for women drivers in the app. If you do this, it’s not guaranteed that you’ll get a female driver, but it does increase your chances.
