PETROS formalises partnership with the University of Canterbury to strengthen Sarawak’s talent pipeline and drive innovation in the energy sector. This Collaboration Agreement reflects a shared commitment to bridge academia and industry by aligning academic learning with real-world energy needs - focusing on developing academic programmes for professional growth and pursuing applied research that fosters innovation while addressing challenges within the energy industry. The University of Canterbury is internationally recognised for its research excellence and strong academic portfolio, particularly in engineering and natural sciences. This collaboration reflects PETROS’ commitment to equipping Sarawak’s workforce with the knowledge and exposure needed to remain competitive in the global transition towards a low-carbon economy, while opening new opportunities for research and development that enhance the quality of life for Sarawakians. Representing PETROS was Steven Chen, Vice President for Engineering, witnessed by Sally Shirlyna Mejeni, Head for Human Resources, while University of Canterbury was represented by Professor Paul Ballantine, Executive Dean Business; and Thea Kleiber, Director of Advancement. Also present were PETROS Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr.) Hamid Bugo; and Dato Alex Ting, Alumni Ambassador for University of Canterbury. Together, we are building a strong foundation for talent development, innovation, and long-term capability – empowering Sarawakians and preparing global talents for a rapidly evolving energy sector.

PETROS formalised a Heads of Agreement with Superconducting Sensor Technology Corporation (SUSTEC) and SC Tubular Solutions Malaysia (SCTSM), reaffirming its commitment to innovation and sustainable progress. The SQUID-TEM Proof-of-Concept marks the first deployment of this technology in onshore Sarawak and Malaysia, introducing a less invasive alternative for detecting hydrocarbons in complex terrains. PETROS signed a Joint Study Agreement with Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC) on 7th November in Kuching, making another step forward in derisking Sarawak onshore exploration through strategic collaboration. This partnership marks JOGMEC’s first direct venture into de-risking an onshore exploration project in Sarawak and will focus on seismic data acquisition and geological & geophysical (G&G) assessments in the Mukah-Balingian area. The Joint Study will adopt new technology and methodology in G&G assessment and incorporate knowledge transfer and development of local capabilities. PETROS recently signed a Storage Study Agreement with Woodside Energy Ltd, reinforcing Sarawak’s vision for a reliable, equitable and inclusive energy ecosystem. This agreement was established under the Sarawak Bid Round (SBR) 2024 – Asia’s first CCUS-focused bid round – and marks a significant milestone in Sarawak’s ambition to become a regional hub for low-carbon solutions. Introduced in 2024, SBR is the first of its kind in Sarawak and a groundbreaking platform in Asia dedicated to carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS). Designed to attract global expertise and participation from multinational companies, SBR was open to international bidders. Woodside Energy emerged as one of the successful bidders under SBR 2024, securing a Storage Study Agreement for a three-year feasibility study to evaluate safe and scalable carbon storage potential, infrastructure requirements, and long-term monitoring programmes at Site 3A in Central Luconia, offshore Sarawak. The Miri CCGT power plant continues to progress, with initiatives to strengthen local workforce capability and ensure operational readiness ahead of commissioning. As part of this effort, 76 Sarawakian operations and maintenance technicians have completed their on-the-job training (OJT), gaining hands-on experience across Bintulu, Miri, Perak and Indonesia. Complementing this, mentoring during commissioning and collaborations with industry and education partners are helping to grow the local skills pipeline. The focus goes beyond safe and reliable operations as we continue building Sarawak’s technical capabilities for the future. For the third consecutive year, PETROS supported the Sarawak Regatta as a Platinum Sponsor, reaffirming our commitment to honouring Sarawak’s multicultural heritage and strengthening unity across communities. Held last weekend under the theme ‘Race for Harmony’, the Regatta reflected the enduring values of peace, collaboration and mutual respect that continue to shape Sarawak - values that also guide us at PETROS. This year, our collaboration with CATS FM created new opportunities to connect with the public and celebrate Sarawak’s vibrant traditions together. PETROS remains committed to initiatives that bring lasting benefit and uphold the spirit of community that defines our home.

#TeamPETROS, led by Ismail Said, Senior VP for Human Capital, Corporate Relations and Services; and Nazrin Banu, Senior VP for Corporate Strategy; joined other Sarawakians at Malaysia International Trade & Exhibition Centre (MITEC) for the 16th Edition of Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak (LBAS) in Kuala Lumpur to discuss cultural connections and our role in responsible resource management. Nazrin also served on the Crocs Tank jury, reviewing student CSR proposals for their social impact, feasibility and alignment with PCDS 2030 and the UN SDGs. Two outstanding projects that closely aligned with PETROS’ strategic goals received support in recognition of their relevance and potential impact. We value these opportunities to listen and collaborate with the Sarawakian community as we continue to manage Sarawak’s resources to support sustainable development, reflecting our purpose: “Harnessing Resources for Sustainable Progress of Sarawak and Beyond.”

PETROS participated in the Sarawak Mega Fair in Singapore, alongside industry leaders and government agencies exploring trade, investment and tourism opportunities. The event was officiated by The Right Honourable Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg. Datuk Joseph Podtung, PETROS Senior Vice President for Growth, spoke on the Investment Opportunities in Sarawak panel, outlining PETROS’ pragmatic approach to energy development - balancing low-carbon ambitions with Sarawak’s natural advantages. He shared how our Purpose: Harnessing Resources for the Sustainable Progress of Sarawak and Beyond, guides current projects and investor pathways in the energy transition. He also joined the Renewable and Future Energy breakout session, discussing the roles of gas, hydrogen and CCUS within a diversified energy mix, alongside the importance of infrastructure, regulation and talent. Investor interest was strong, reflected through active dialogue, follow-up engagements and visits to the PETROS booth from stakeholders keen to understand emerging energy opportunities in Sarawak. Our participation reaffirmed PETROS’ commitment to responsible growth, strategic partnerships and long-term value for Sarawak.

PETROS, through its subsidiary Petroleum Sarawak Exploration and Production Sdn Bhd (PSEP), has recently entered into a strategic partnership with Baker Hughes, a global leader in energy technology and services, to explore collaboration opportunities aimed at building a resilient and sustainable energy future for Sarawak. The partnership will leverage Baker Hughes’ global expertise and innovative technologies while nurturing Sarawakian talent as future leaders of the energy industry. Both parties will also work together to strengthen Sarawak’s talent pipeline through on-the-job training, research and education initiatives. Representing PETROS was Jeremy Wong, Vice President for Subsurface and Development, while Quach Anh Vu, Managing Director for OFSE, Southeast Asia, represented Baker Hughes.
