In Akwa Ibom, the fight against cervical cancer is led by women who show up with heart, patience, and determination. In riverine villages, health workers travel by boat, visiting homes where many families have never heard of HPV. Alongside trusted community elders, they answer questions, calm fears, and help parents say “yes” to vaccinating their daughters. In town, the work takes place in schools. Young health workers meet teachers and parents, explaining the vaccine and guiding girls to get protected confidently. On vaccination day, classrooms are filled with girls standing tall, knowing they’re taking a step toward a healthier future. Different places, different challenges but one goal; no girl left behind. "Knowledge only changes lives when we use it" -Wafaa Saeed Abdelatef At UNICEF Nigeria's first Knowledge Management Festival, it was great to have thought-provoking exchanges with leadership, colleagues and sister agencies. Through a vibrant marketplace of innovations and recognition of teams who excel in documenting and knowledge sharing, the day showcased how a learning culture is shaping our programmes for children. As our Representative, Wafaa Saeed, emphasized: “Knowledge Management is everyone’s responsibility, and when we document, share, and learn together, we multiply impact for children.”

On a recent visit to Nigeria, I met a volunteer named Adedigba, who goes door-to-door in her community twice per year to distribute Mectizan, a medicine that prevents and treats river blindness. Armed with a "dose pole"—learn more about this simple but powerful tool at the link below—and determination, Adedigba has helped protect hundreds of people from this preventable disease. Nigeria is making remarkable progress toward eliminating river blindness. UNICEF is proud to play a role by working alongside community health volunteers and partners to support medicine distribution in 12 states. But what’s sustaining this success might surprise you: budgets. For the first time, several Nigerian states have added specific budget line items for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). This step means governments are taking ownership and ensuring progress doesn’t depend solely on donors or NGOs, but is prioritized and funded locally. At UNICEF, we know advocacy isn’t only about delivering programs; it’s also about helping governments budget for what matters most. Where you allocate resources is where you show commitment. Here are a few reflections from my time in Nigeria, and what this inspiring fight against river blindness can teach us about leadership, ownership and lasting impact.

Airtel Nigeria and UNICEF: Strengthening a Transformative Partnership for Education We were pleased to receive the UNICEF leadership team at our Banana Island Headquarters for a courtesy visit and high-level strategic meeting focused on deepening collaboration under the Reimagine Education Program. Led by UNICEF Country Representative, Wafaa Saeed, and Chief of Lagos Office, Celine Lafoucriere, the team met with Airtel Nigeria CEO, Dinesh Balsingh, supported by Director, Corporate Communications & CSR, Femi Adeniran. Dinesh highlighted Airtel’s commitment to driving social impact through education and digital inclusion. “Education is the pillar on which we rally our CSR,” he stated, noting that "we have had a good journey with UNICEF, not only in Nigeria but in all markets where Airtel Africa operates.” In her remarks, Ms. Wafaa acknowledged the strong alignment of values between UNICEF and Airtel, particularly in extending access to education and technology to remote parts of the country. "People with lesser opportunities are in those areas," she said. Reinforcing these points, Adeniran expressed Airtel's excitement at the success of the Reimagine Education project which is set to hit the 1 million learners mark in a couple of months. Also in company of the UNICEF Country Representative were Education Specialist, Babagana Aminu; Partnership Specialist, Ochuko Ege; GenU Specialist, Bharat Kundra; and Communications Officer, Blessing Ejiofor. Together, Airtel Nigeria and UNICEF remain united in purpose, so that every Nigerian child can learn, connect, and thrive. #AirtelNigeria #UNICEF #ReimagineEducation #Education Airtel Africa
