Last Thursday, 20 November, we inaugurated the new edition of our Mentoring Programme. Many thanks to the Italian Cultural Institute in Amsterdam for hosting us so kindly. We are truly grateful to our speakers, Rossella Mauri and Federico Barbieri, for sharing their experiences, the challenges they have faced during their careers, and their valuable insights on working in the financial and banking sector in the Netherlands and beyond. Thank you also to all the participants who contributed to such an engaging conversation, enriching the exchange of ideas and sharing questions, curiosities, doubts and reflections. Lastly, a special shout-out to the UIS Netherlands team for organising the event and making it a success! We’re excited for what’s ahead… stay tuned! 🚀🇮🇹🌍
Over ons
United Italian Societies (UIS) was instituted with the intent of harmonizing Italian university societies in synergetic projects with political and corporate institutions, to showcase and connect Italian excellence with emerging talent, as well as facilitating communication between institutions and student body on key topics in the pursuit of balanced innovation and mentorship. The organisation is a community-building opportunity for students, offering support for the Netherlands based Italian community in adapting, learning and growing in an uncertain political and social framework, with open-mindedness rooted in a terrain of shared cultural values.

On November 28th, we had the honor of hosting the event “Diplomacy in Data: The Power of Science in Modern Decision-Making,” organized in collaboration with Embassy of Italy in the Netherlands at the Italian Culture Institute in Amsterdam. As the first event of the year with the Italian Embassy, it featured distinguished speakers: Counsellor Simon Carta, Professor Anastasija Tetereva, and Alycia Colijn. Discussions explored the ethical and technical dimensions of artificial intelligence, its implications for diplomacy, and Italy’s role in shaping these conversations. Professor Tetereva shed light on how AI is transforming diplomacy, such as using text data for policy analysis and conflict prevention, and geospatial data for crisis response and environmental diplomacy. She also highlighted the dangers of nontransparent machine learning, including erosion of trust, manipulation risks, and limited accountability. Alycia Colijn illustrated real-world ethical dilemmas of autonomous systems in conflict zones, showcasing how poorly designed AI can lead to unintended harm, misoptimization, and humanitarian crises. She emphasized the importance of ethical guidelines to avoid collateral damage and ensure AI operates within international norms. The presentations sparked stimulating discussions, with guests eager to delve deeper into these pressing issues. Thank you to everyone who joined and contributed to this enriching experience!
