Nouveau in the city.
The entire history, as well as the rich and
diverse heritage left by the style, is commented
and analyzed in detail by the author. The
guide also includes a visitation itinerary that
encompasses sumptuous mansions, public
buildings and commercial establishments as
well as residency faades, railings, furniture,
decoration, all inspired by Art Nouveau.

propitiated economic
development in the
contemporary world; it
qualitatively transformed
productive processes and
triggered, among other things,
the advent of the great
industries, the expansion of
world trade, the birth of the
industrial bourgeoisie, of new
social and economic doctrines
and of stronger rivalry between
nations. That was when
economic and social power
ceased to belong exclusively to
trade capitalism, and made its
way to other segments
namely, to all those who were
productive and who could
amass fortunes.

conditions, a new, elegant and
refined style was born,
coherent above all with the
customs of the bourgeois
society, and especially related
to the decorative arts, whether
interior or exterior.
Sensing that the astounding
industrial development of their
time allowed for the serial
production of artworks, the
artists in the end of
that century, in turn,
through their
romantically inspired
heritage, sought to
create a
spontaneous and
original artistic
form that
could also
satisfy their
need for individual
expression and their
personal desires.
Moving away from
Modernism, in an
indisputable effort
towards renovation, they
sought for an artistic
form that was adapted

materiais trazidos pelo
desenvolvimento tecnolgico.
O resultado dessa busca foi o
art nouveau, um modo de
rejeitar sutilmente a mquina.
Adotando uma atitude
exclusiva e requintada em
relao arte e vida, os
estetas do art nouveau aliaram,
com simplicidade, o belo ao
til, a matria ao esprito,
adaptando de maneira
harmoniosa a esttica tcnica.
Para compor seus trabalhos,
utilizaram a prpria natureza,
expressando e apregoando a
interminvel criatividade
natural como a mais importante
fonte de inspirao. Ressalte-se,
no entanto, que alguns
elementos decorativos do art
nouveau figuram tambm em
estilos anteriores.
A influncia mais direta,
talvez porque mais prxima,
foi a da arte utilitria de
William Morris, escritor, poeta,
pintor e desenhador ingls.
Sua arte, com razo assim
denominada, explorava a
arquitetura domstica e a

result of that quest was Art
Nouveau, a subtle rejection of
the machine.
Adopting an exclusive and
cultivated attitude towards art
and life, the aesthetes of Art
Nouveau allied with simplicity
the beautiful and the useful,
matter and spirit,
harmoniously adapting the
aesthetical to the technical. In
their work, they used nature
itself as a material, expressing
and proclaiming natures
unending creativity as the
most important source of
inspiration. It should be
stressed, however, that some
decorative elements of Art
Nouveau were also featured in
previous styles.
The most direct influence,
perhaps due to its proximity,
was the utilitarian art of
William Morris, the British
writer, poet, painter and
drawing artist. His art, well
deserving of the name,
explored the craftsmanship of
domestic architecture and
interior design, with the
purpose of replacing
everything related to the cold
objectivity of the machine with

O artista criou este vaso com
elementos da fauna e da flora, esta
sugerida pelas nuances do verde
nas folhas e do branco azulado na
veste feminina. A jovem parece
brotar da prpria natureza, com a
qual se confunde. Sua delicada
mo movimenta-se em direo ao
pssaro, como se quisesse afast-lo
delicadamente de si. Na base da
pea so representados,
brincando, vrios putti figuras de
meninos nus, pequenos e
rechonchudos, usados como
elemento ornamental na escultura
e na pintura, sobretudo na
Renascena. Chama ateno o
colorido e o delicado acabamento
do vaso. A pea de propriedade
particular.

The artist created this vase

inspired by elements of fauna and
flora, the latter suggested by the
hues of green in the leaves and a
bluish white in the womans
outfit. The young girl seems to
bloom from nature itself, with
which she merges. Her delicate
hand moves towards the bird as if
she wanted to gently push him
away. On the base, playful putti
are represented figures of
naked, plump little boys, an
ornamental motif commonly used
in sculpture and in painting,
particularly during the
Renaissance. The colors and the
delicate finish of the vase call
ones attention. The piece belongs
to a private owner.

esquerda, sustenta um recipiente
com lquido; a mo direita sugere

O movimento se faz presente mais
uma vez: ela colhe um lrio. As
vestes finas de ambas, modelando
seus corpos, possuem o mesmo
tecido e feitio. As peas so
arrematadas por uma folhagem

The first young woman holds an
amphora with her right hand and
a vessel full of liquid with the
left; the right hand suggests
movement towards the lips.
The girl to the right is pictured
with her long hair hanging low,
unlike the amphora girl, whose
hair is tied up. Once again there
is movement: she picks up a lily.
Their fine garments, molding
their bodies, are made of the
same fabric and in the same
fashion. Intertwining foliage
finishes both pieces.

pr-rafaelitas e dos simbolistas,
revelou certo gosto pelo
japonisme e teve sua origem e
postulados estticos presos a
vrios pases. Isso explica a
variedade terminolgica com

recebe o nome de modern style,
adotado tambm na Frana, pois
a Inglaterra teve papel
significativo na origem do estilo

new artistic style was
influenced by the
Pre-Raphaelites and by the
Symbolists, showed a certain
taste for Japonisme and had
its origins and aesthetical
postulates associated to
several countries. That
explains the great variety of
names by which it is known.
In England, they call it
Modern Style, a term used
also in France: England had a
significant role in the origin of
the style, and saw the first
concrete manifestation of the
new aesthetic standards, in a

Pre-Raphaelites A group of
artists active in England from
1848. They were against the
artificiality of academia, then
associated with Classicism, and
defended a return to a more
spontaneous, nature-oriented
form of art, a type of practice
common before the Renaissance,
particularly before Raphael. While
embracing the arts and crafts of
Medieval times as a paradigm,
they sought to highlight the
superiority of manual labor over
industrial manufacturing.

Na Frana, criou-se a j
mencionada expresso art
nouveau, que talvez a mais
difundida e a que se fixou no
Brasil. Com a construo do
Mtropolitain por Hector
Guimard, tornou-se moda
chamar o estilo tambm de
style metro. Na Itlia, adotou-se
a designao art nouveau, alm
das expresses style Liberty, ou
stile nuovo, originadas na
Inglaterra. A denominao
Liberty referia-se a Arthur
Lasenby Liberty, proprietrio de
uma loja londrina que vendia
anis, broches e brincos
originais concebidos por
designers. Nos Estados Unidos,
prevaleceu a designao style
Tiffany, uma homenagem ao
principal representante do estilo
no pas, Louis Comfort Tiffany.
Na Espanha, o estilo era
chamado modernista, arte
jovem ou stile Gaud, tambm
homenagem a um artista
inovador e divulgador da nova
maneira de criar no comeo do
sculo XX, Antnio Gaud.
Como se pode observar, o
novo estilo, de natureza
cosmopolita, recebeu pelo

expression Art Nouveau was
created in France, and is
perhaps the most widespread,
and the one used in Brazil.
With the construction of the
Mtropolitain by Hector
Guimard, it became
fashionable to refer to it as
Style Metro. In Italy, the name
Art Nouveau was maintained,
along with the expressions
Style Liberty, or Stile Nuovo,
originated in England. Liberty
stands for Arthur Lasenby
Liberty, owner of a London
shop that sold original
designer rings, brooches and
earrings. In the United States,
the designation Tiffany Style
prevailed as a homage to the
main representative of the
style in that country, Louis
Comfort Tiffany. In Spain, the
style was called Modernista,
Arte Joven or Stile Gaud, also
paying homage to an
innovative artist and
propagator of the new
creative paradigm in the
beginning of the 20 th century,
Anton Gaud.
As shown before, the style,
due to its cosmopolitan
nature, received at least ten
denominations. That can be

Aestheticism, Synthetism and
the Pre-Raphaelite movements
of Arts and Crafts, it was also
a forerunner to the Bauhaus,
in Germany. It was the first
modern design school whose
main endeavor was to
eliminate the distinction
between artisan and artist.
Not only did it go by many
names, but the new aesthetics,
in itself varied and
diverse, also
embodied different
characteristics
according to the
country where it
was practiced, and
was generally manifested in
almost all art forms.

flower-woman emerged, with
the wide usage of natural,
exotic flowers, perfumed
gardenias or orchid bouquets.
Feminine figures were liberated
from rigid aesthetic standards
and were represented in jolly
dances, as in Jules Chrets
posters, in the elegant stylizing
of Alphonse Mucha or even in
the morbidity of Gustav Klimt.
The erotic, emancipated
woman was seductive with her
delicate and asymmetrical
curves. The beauty of color
and the sinuous bodies would
draw the consumer towards
the new, the unexpected, and,
for that, they were also used
as graphic elements in
advertisements for almost
anything.

Gallicism in Belm
Brazil, like other countries in
South America, did not escape
the influence of European fads,
especially Gallicism and its
manifestations, Art Nouveau
included. Such influence
represents a projection of the
European bourgeois taste, with
no foundations on local culture,
as will be discussed further on.

anos 1880 e a Primeira Guerra
Mundial, tendo seu apogeu em
1889, quando foi inaugurada a
torre Eiffel, construda para a
Exposio Universal. O termo
celebrava o clima que ento se
vivia, marcado pela efervescncia
cultural, pela paz entre os pases
vizinhos e por grandes inovaes
tecnolgicas, como a inveno do
telefone, do cinema, do automvel
e do avio. Nas artes, os
movimentos que expressaram esse
clima, notadamente o
impressionismo e o art nouveau,
por vezes so caracterizados como
estilo belle poque.

French history between the year
1880 and the First World War,
reaching its apogee in 1889 with
the inauguration of the Eiffel
tower, built for the World Fair.
The term celebrated the
atmosphere of the time, marked
by cultural effervescence, peace
among neighboring countries
and great technological
innovations, such as the
invention of the telephone, the
cinema, automobiles and planes.
In the arts, the movements that
expressed such atmosphere,
notably Impressionism and Art
Nouveau, are sometimes referred
to as Belle poque style.

Trade and Navigation
Company of Amazonas in
1852 and the opening of the
Amazon River to international
trade and navigation, the
region began to put an end to
the isolation in which it had
been living for decades and
started a process of
development. Steam
navigation was in charge of
transporting novelty to the
cities of Belm and Manaus,
two capitals that began to take
on a crucial historical role as
centers of civilizing activity.
Movement in the regions ports
was intense. Through them,
products recently launched in
Europe arrived, and were
awaited with anxiety by
tradesmen, who thrived before

As concepes de urbanismo
e de paisagismo, os modismos
e as tendncias literrias e
estticas que chegavam da

things that stood out were the
monumental Baroque
churches, religious convents
and a few sumptuous
two-storied houses, built in the
last decades of the 18th
century.
In the late 19th century,
rubber farmers in the Amazon,
who monopolized the
production of latex and
benefited from its high prices
in world markets, amassed
fortunes and turned Belm and
Manaus into the capitals of
grandeur and squandering. An
international shipping port of
commodities, Belm was ready
to absorb the latest European
novelties. The conceptions of
urbanism and landscape
design, the fads, the literary
and aesthetic tendencies that
arrived from Europe began to
fulfill the worldly and
intellectual needs of the local
elite.
In great ships, Europe
exported the gracious Art
Nouveau decoration which,
particularly in Belm, came to
ornament town squares,
government buildings,
residential palaces and even

local cultural standards,
founded in the needs and
conditionings of regional
men; secondly, because its
aesthetic expression was
inherent to a stage of

With the proclamation of
the Republic in 1889, the
reigning political orientation
asked for a total rupture with
Monarchys traditions. The
governor of Par was Augusto
Montenegro when colonel
Antnio Lemos was elected
intendant of Belm,
becoming the omnipotent
lord of the city.
The most polemical
political figure in Par during
the Old Republic
(1889-1930), Lemos was
characterized by his
extraordinary work capacity.

Through European wealth, the
urban phenomenon
materialized in the modern
city, and that, in turn,
produced the figures of the
bourgeois and the flneur.
Inspired by Paris and its
boulevards, the
re-urbanization project of
the city shows how
important it was for the
regional elite to follow the
steps of great European
nations. Belm was directly
connected to everything
that happened in the French
capital, and made Paris its
civilizational mirror, copying
everything from the latest
fashion trend to behavior
manners regarded as chic.

the paraenses*, formerly a
people of conservative
customs and limited
aspirations, now tried to
mirror themselves in
fin-de-sicle France.
However, since Brazil had
not undergone a social,
cultural and symbolic
development such as the one
experienced in France, the
Belle poque atmosphere as
it was manifested in the
society of Belm was simply
a new state of mind, a
contagious joie-de-vivre, true
euphoria in the face of big
money. Often unaware of
that, and subordinating
themselves both in the
economic and intellectual
fields, the rubber elite was
charmed by the Gallicism
that dominated the spiritual
panorama of the Amazon
during the rubber cycle,
seemingly creating its own
tropical Paris.

As an artistic expression of
Belle poque, Art Nouveau
has left its marks on clothing,
furniture, goldsmithery,
sculpture and graphic arts in
Belm. Unfortunately, with the
downfall of rubber economy,
those objects went out of
fashion and the buildings
where they were
commercialized were sold. It is
possible, however, to find
pieces of that style in the state
or municipal museums, or in
private hands. There are,
among others, crystal and
opaline decorated chandeliers,
faience columns and their
respective cachepot with plant
vases, alabaster columns with
inset floral motifs in golden
bronze, wooden columns,
corbels, coffee tables,
cabinets, sconces, porcelain
spittoons (decorated or
undecorated), picture frames,
centerpieces, jars and bowls
made to pour water on ones
hands, plates, biscuit and
small objects such as jewel
and music boxes.

Few were the European

artists and craftsmen
dedicated to the fabrication
of Art Nouveau furniture. In
the beginning of the
movement, pieces were
handcrafted by commission,
which made them
expensive, accessible only
to the elite. With the

Sculptures
In Belm, there are
sculptures in government
buildings and town squares.
However, most of them were
and still are in private hands,
adorning their mansions.
In the style of that time,
nude bodies of young
women were depicted curled
up on long, thin and sheer
fabric, which followed their
sinuous lines and the
well-shaped volumes of their
bodies. However, there are
few natural elements in those
sculptures; elements other
than plants subtly finish the
pieces.
The same cannot be said
of cemetery art. Many
renowned artists, Italian or of
other nationalities, have left
an admirable collection of

Art Nouveau in Architecture

Art Nouveau
ornamentation is frequently
present on buildings from the
tropical Belle poque. The
faades of many of those
buildings are aligned with the
frontal limits of the lot, with a
lateral entrance usually
complemented by a porch
with iron railings and Art
Nouveau windows. The
parapets feature molded
see-through blocks*, most of
them adorned with
geometrical designs, replacing
the traditional balustrade. Also
relevant is the use of glass in

In Belm, the architecture

of the beginning of the 20th
century had its summit in the
sumptuous public and private
buildings of Antnio Lemos
time. The typology of buildings
then, both in Belm and in
Manaus, is Neoclassical and/or
Eclectic. Such preference by
local elites states a sort of
social behavior that, under
certain aspects, is likened to
that of the coffee farming
nobility in So Paulo.

addition, ornate lintels are
present on the upper part of
walls and doors and above
windows. The buildings
Eclectic look is emphasized by
its dome, which emulates a
Moorish style. This sort of

e/ou ecletismo vai marcar
presena na arquitetura
brasileira ao longo de toda a

Aps essa breve
caracterizao da arquitetura
do final do sculo XIX e
incio do XX, vamos
examinar o aproveitamento
do art nouveau nos prdios
j existentes em Belm antes
da chegada da borracha.
Ressalte-se que, desde o
sculo XVIII, afora as antigas
igrejas e conventos, uma
nova tipologia de prdio
urbano se destacava na
cidade: o sobrado. Este era
edificado para uso do
governo, como residncia
particular ou loja comercial.
No ltimo caso, no trreo
ficava a loja e, no andar de
cima, a residncia do
proprietrio uma espcie
de apartamento em sua
primeira verso brasileira.

Neoclassicism and/or
Eclecticism was markedly
present in Brazilian
architecture throughout the
entire first half of the 20th
century, and somewhat into
the second.
After a brief
characterization of
architecture in the end of the
19th century and the beginning
of the 20th, we proceed to an
analysis of Art Nouveau style
usage on buildings that
already existed in Belm
before the advent of rubber
economy. It should be
highlighted that ever since the
18th century, with the
exception of churches and
convents, a new typology of
urban building was
predominant in town: the
two-storey building. It was
used in governmental
premises, private residences or
commercial establishments.
On the latter, the shop was
located on the ground floor
and the upper storey was used
as the proprietors residence
the first Brazilian version of
the apartment. The Paris
nAmrica Store, which will be
discussed further on, is one
example of this kind of usage.

delas tem o brao direito erguido,
segurando no alto uma luminria
de vidro opalinado em forma de
globo. Com o brao esquerdo
protege o rosto sutilmente contra o
sol. O corpo seminu possui formas
arredondadas e recebe de modo
suave um tecido leve cujo
drapeado translcido. A outra
imagem tem o brao esquerdo
erguido e tambm sustenta uma

arm. The seminude body has soft
curves and is gently covered by

O Bar do Parque Ao lado do Theatro

da Paz h um quiosque atribudo ao
arquiteto Francisco Bolonha, pelo estilo
da edificao e pelo material nele
utilizado. Suas caractersticas
correspondem s do palacete
residencial desse engenheiro. Trata-se
do Bar do Parque, construdo anos
depois do Theatro. O ponto altamente
disputado pelos bomios, intelectuais e
artistas. Nele se destacam as formas
sinuosas das mos-francesas em ferro
fundido, de linhas art nouveau.
Desde que comeou a funcionar, o
quiosque passou alm do teatro a
vender entradas da casa de espetculos.
Segundo informaes de Joo
Rodrigues Fernandes14, tambm era
possvel adquirir ingressos na antiga loja
comercial Casa Franco, no Bairro do
Comrcio. Portanto, existiam pelo
menos trs pontos de venda das
entradas da maior casa de espetculos,
entre as muitas existentes na belle
poque: a bilheteria do prprio teatro, o
Bar do Parque e a Casa Franco.

to architect Francisco Bolonha, for
its style and building materials. Its
features correspond to those of the
engineers house. It is Bar do
Parque (Park Bar), built years after
the Theatro. It is a busy spot,
crowded with bohemians,
intellectuals and artists. The
sinuous lines of its cast iron corbels
stand out as examples of Art
Nouveau.
Ever since its opening, the kiosk
has also been selling tickets for the
theater. According to Joo
Rodrigues Fernandes14, one could
also buy them at the old
commercial store Casa Franco, in
the Borough of Comrcio. That
means there were at least three
places selling tickets for the largest
venue among the many existing
during Belle poque: the theater
booth, Bar do Parque and Casa
Franco.

Waldemar Henrique Theater

A histria do Teatro
Waldemar Henrique tem sua
origem no arrendamento do
terreno do ento parque Joo
Coelho (atual praa da
Repblica), posterior a uma
resoluo de 1912. Era
governador, poca, Virglio
Lopes de Miranda. Pretendia-se
edificar no local dois prdios
que fossem condizentes com a
poca e com o luxo exigido pela
cidade e pelo governo. Com a
interveno da municipalidade,
as construes levaram mais ou
menos seis meses para serem
terminadas. Alm da interveno
nas obras, a intendncia tomou
para si a responsabilidade e a
propriedade das edificaes,
bem como as benfeitorias feitas
no parque Joo Coelho.

The history of Waldemar

Henrique Theater begins with
the lease of the land from
former Joo Coelho Park
(currently Repblica Square),
after a 1912 resolution. Virglio
Lopes de Miranda was governor
at the time. The purpose of that
lease was the construction of
two buildings attuned with the
times and with the luxury
demanded by city and
government. With the
intervention of the municipality,
construction works took about
six months to be concluded.
Besides intervening in the works,
the intendancy took upon itself
the responsibility for and the
property of the buildings, as well
as improvements undertaken on
Joo Coelho Park.

O Palcio Lauro Sodr foi

mandado construir por
Manoel Bernardo de Mello e
Castro, governador e
capito-geral do estado do
Gro-Par e Maranho. Mello
e Castro veio para o Brasil em
meados da dcada de 1750,
na comitiva de Mendona
Furtado. Seguindo as plantas
do arquiteto italiano Jos
Antnio Landi, o palacete foi
erigido na segunda metade do
sculo XVIII, a fim de abrigar a
sede do poder pblico e servir
de moradia ao governador da
provncia e sua famlia.

Lauro Sodr Palace was

On buildings from the
turn of the 19 th to the 20 th
century in Par, the use of
tiles deserves special
attention. Tiles were
incorporated, particularly,
into buildings in the
metropolitan area of Belm.
Most of the faades and
interiors in the citys
buildings were tiled.
These glass tiles were
found most
frequently on
the avenues,
streets and
alleys of the
boroughs of
Comrcio,
Campina,
Nazar,
Batista
Campos and
Reduto; they
appeared with

Carvalhaes, currently inactive,
located at 15 de Novembro Street,

certain resemblance of shape
between them and the grip of one

commercial district, there are

notable ornament is a
monumental staircase in Art
Nouveau style made of cast
iron in France. To assemble it
on the other side of the
Atlantic, Francisco Pereira da

on the subject. The decoration
of that sumptuous commercial
establishment attracts tourists
and art enthusiasts to this day,

time, the palace also featured
a chapel, that did not conflict

death of its proprietor, it still
survived for a few years.
However, with the somewhat

mansion suffered a spiritual

Durante a gesto do
governador Augusto
Montenegro, entre outras
obras importantes, promoveu
as reformas do Theatro da Paz
e do Palcio do Governo.
O palacete residencial de
Victor Maria da Silva guarda as
marcas da sensibilidade de seu
proprietrio. Nele podem ser
apreciados, at hoje, oito
painis de azulejos criados por
A. Arnoux e confeccionados por
Boulanger & Cie., alm de um
outro painel contendo o braso
da famlia. As grades das
janelas, as cantoneiras que
servem e ornamentam o ptio
interno, os lustres e o porto de
entrada so em ferro fundido,

Public Works Division,
Secretary of Public Works,
Lands and Transport, as well
as director of Theatro da
Paz. During governor
Augusto Montenegros
mandate, among other
important works, he
undertook the renovations of
Theatro da Paz and the
Government Palace (Palcio
do Governo).
The residential mansion
that belonged to Victor
Maria da Silva keeps the
signs of its owners
sensibility. One can
appreciate, to this day, eight
tile panels created by A.
Arnoux and produced by
Boulanger & Cie., apart from
another panel with the
family coat of arms. The
window rails at the entrance
are of cast iron, all
presenting Art Nouveau
characteristics. The wall
copings and the ceiling of
the entrance hall, as well as
the porch ceiling, are made
of tinplate, with reliefs and

In the city of Belm, Art

Nouveau appears not only on
the buildings mentioned here;
it is also scattered around the
city, manifested on private
residences at times only on
details of small tiles, on
otherwise Neoclassical
houses.
Those residences, although
garnished with Art Nouveau
motifs and pieces, are not
innovative in their spatial
distribution. As previously
mentioned, in architecture,
that style always appears as a
superficial element. It reflected
the Eclecticism of the time,
extended also to commercial
and public buildings.
In order to follow the style
of the time, architecture in
Belm tried to portray nature
on buildings, on frontal

Apesar disso, a intensidade

com que a elite da Amaznia
cultivou as regras emanadas da
belle poque, e mesmo os
monumentos arquitetnicos e
demais representaes estticas
peculiares transio vivida na
passagem do sculo XIX para o
XX no bastaram para esconder
o artificialismo presente na
adoo desses modelos pela
elite regional. A superao
histrica do extrativismo da
borracha, com a conseqente
marginalizao da Amaznia,
provocou a queda dessa elite e,
com ela, a estrutura simblica
que sustentava, de forma tnue,
as Paris tropicais. Dessa
forma, as folias do ltex
deixaram entre ns marcante
impresso de melancolia.

Amazon elite cultivated the
norms of Belle poque, and
even the architectural
monuments and other
aesthetic representations
peculiar to the transition
experienced on the turn of the
20th century, were not enough
to hide the artificiality that was
present in the adoption of
those standards by the regional
elite. The historical demise of
rubber extraction, with the
consequent marginalization of
the Amazon, caused the
downfall of that elite and, with
it, of the symbolic apparatus
that sustained, even feebly, the
tropical Paris. Thus, the
latex follies left us with a
strikingly melancholy sensation.

efmera sociedade da belle
poque foi, rigorosamente,
marcada e sufocada pela sua
prpria exausto, o art nouveau,
ltimo e gracioso estilo do
perodo, extinguiu-se
prematuramente. Para usar uma
imagem familiar, pode-se dizer
que ambos identificam-se num
mesmo aspecto: no deixaram
descendentes.

As the ephemeral Belle

poque society was rigorously
marked and suffocated by its
own overflow, Art Nouveau,
the last and graceful style of
the period, was also
prematurely extinct. Using a
familiar allegory, one can say
that both are equal in one
aspect: they left no
descendants.
