Hi Daniel I have #include <iostream> and that should be enough since it #includes <istream> and <ostream>. I also use namespace std; The strange thing is that it started when I downloaded Dev-cpp v4.9.7.3= with MinGW/gcc 3.2. Previously released dev-cpp combined with a separately downloaded MingGW3.2= did'nt make this error to occour. /J *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 2003-01-28 at 13:15 Daniel Glenfield wrote: >are you #including ostream.h ? > > > >>From: "J=F6rgen" <qa...@ho...> >>To: dev...@li... >>Subject: [Dev-C++] ofstream error >>Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 13:28:56 +0100 >> >>Hi again list. >>I posted the following a few days ago. cout and cin are usually used for simple DOS based programs it's basically C for console, CIN = console in, (ie keyboard, what u type into command prompt) and COUT = console OUT (what is OUTput from the console/command) 28/01/03 10:56:49 PM, "Ioannis Vranos" <no...@ho...> wrote: > > > From: "Ioannis Vranos" <no...@ho...> > > To: <dev...@li...> > Subject:Re: [Dev-C++] rebuild doesn't always work > Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 13:56:49 +0200 (GTB Standard Time) > > > > -------Original Message------- > > From: Aimee Smith > > Date: ?????, 28 ?????????? 2003 1:27:34 ?? > To: 'OROSZI Bal?zs'; dev...@li... > > Subject: [Dev-C++] rebuild doesn't always work > > Greetings; > We, my students and I, were working in devC++ and SOMETIMES the rebuild > command worked :); > other times it did not -- even when we copied the code into another program > -- even after exiting devC++ > and restarting -- still recieving the old code. > We are working in version 4.x (something) as that was what was left to me > by the previous instructor. > We only create new source code -- not projects. > > > ==> Well better try to download the latest version. > > > > It's an Introductory level course -- they are having a hard enough time > with > remembering when to use cout and cin > > > ==> cout is the standard output (usually screen) and cin the standard input > (usually keyboard). Just as long as you are aware that strtod, strtof, strtol, ... can perform tricks that sscanf can not. sscanf works reasonable for processing a configuration file with known contents. It doesn't work when parsing a language, or an expression, since you don't know the contents of the line until you have parsed it. /Per W On Tue, 28 Jan 2003, Ioannis Vranos wrote: > -------Original Message------- > > From: Per Westermark > Date: =D4=F1=DF=F4=E7, 28 =C9=E1=ED=EF=F5=DC=F1=E9=EF=F2 2003 10:43:25 = =F0=EC > To: Ioannis Vranos > Cc: dev...@li... > Subject: Re: [Dev-C++] atof 2... > > sscanf can convert one or multiplie parameters from a text string into > corresponding variables. Hello again! > Let me see if I got this right. That line you wrote above will actually > ignore the next 10 chars? Why 10? Is that just an arbitary number? And > which '\n' is it looking for? Or does it just ignore the next 10 '\n'? From some docs: " ignore( int nCount, delimiter ); Where nCount is the amount of characters to be ignored and delimiter is what its name says. It can be EOF if you want to stop at the end of the file. This way, this function is the same as seekg(). But it can also be '\n' for example, which will stop on the first new line. " So it will ignore the next nCount characters and stop if the read character is delimiter. -- Greetings, Balázs |

Hi Santiago, Yeah , it should be like that , of course . Thanks for pointing that out. I've been using that prog for some time .I think the reason it worked for me was that I wasn't doing anymore allocation after that line , and the line was near the end of code .So there was more headspace available for the bigger struct . sscanf can convert one or multiplie parameters from a text string into corresponding variables. The problem is that you have very little control of what sscanf considers white characters etc. And in case of a conversion problem, it isn't easy to point exactly at the failing character. With strtod, you get a pointer to the first un-processed character of your input string. For a parser, the normal action is to process characters one at a time - that means that strotod is never called unless the parser knows that the first character is the start of a number, i.e. the next character to process is 0-9 or a decimal separator (. or , depending on locale). Uppon return of atrtod, the parser may then immediately continue parsing at the endptr position. /Per W On Sun, 19 Jan 2003, Ioannis Vranos wrote: > ------Original Message------- > > From: Per Westermark > Date: Sunday, 19 January 2003 10:48:26 PM > To: j b > Cc: dev...@li... > Subject: Re: [Dev-C++] atof 2... > > Hello! > > Don't use atof() for converting from text string to a double. > > Use strtod() instead, since it will inform you how many characters it > consumed. > > > > ==> What about sscanf()? > > > > Ioannis Vranos > > * Programming pages: http://www.noicys.freeurl.com > * Alternative URL: http://run.to/noicys |

Hello! Dany P. Wu wrote: > They always say "There are no such thing as stupid questions, just > plenty of inquisitive idiots" but here it goes........ Haha. Your question was actually a very good one. It took me at least 20 mins to figure out, but I have found what is the problem. When you use cin before you use getline, it leaves a newline character in the input (the console) and when getline is called it reads that newline character and returns with an empty line. To fix this, use the ignore function after you use cin and before you call getline: cin.ignore(10,'\n'); // skip 10 chars until reaches '\n' This will ignore all the '\n' characters so that getline will work properly. Here is where to put it exactly: > ============================================ > #include <iostream> > #include <string> > > #define TAB '\t' > > main() > { > using namespace std; > > //Define how many planets there are > int MAX; > cout << "Enter the number of planets: "; > cin >> MAX; > //Define max length of planet names > int LENGTH; > cout << "Enter max length of planet names: "; > cin >> LENGTH; > cout <<"There will be " << MAX << " planets" <<endl; > cout << "Each will be " << LENGTH << " chars long" <<endl; > LENGTH = LENGTH + 1; > > //Define the 2 arrays, planet names and distances > char name[LENGTH]; > char planet[MAX][LENGTH]; > int distance[MAX]; > int DIST; > int index = 0; cin.ignore(10,'\n'); // skip 10 chars until reaches '\n' > > while (index < MAX) > { > cout << index << endl; //I put this in here to show that it > skipped the value 0 > cin.getline(name,LENGTH); > strcpy(planet[index],name); > index++; > } > > index = 0; > > for (index = 0; index < MAX; index++) > { > cout << endl << planet[index] << endl; > } > > system("PAUSE"); > return(0); > } > ============================================ -- Greetings, Balázs |

They always say "There are no such thing as stupid questions, just plenty of inquisitive idiots" but here it goes........ I'm still a complete beginner in C++ and programming in general. I've written yet another silly little code to get used to the syntax and arrays. I was going to use parallel arrays but so far have only tried to use a single array. Something is causing me problems. The "while" loop ignored the first "index" value of 0 and jumped to the second value of 1 before executing the commands within that loop. I've tried using a "for" loop with no success either. Can someone try this out and tell me what I've missed? Much appreciated........... ============================================ #include <iostream> #include <string> #define TAB '\t' main() { using namespace std; //Define how many planets there are int MAX; cout << "Enter the number of planets: "; cin >> MAX; //Define max length of planet names int LENGTH; cout << "Enter max length of planet names: "; cin >> LENGTH; cout <<"There will be " << MAX << " planets" <<endl; cout << "Each will be " << LENGTH << " chars long" <<endl; LENGTH = LENGTH + 1; //Define the 2 arrays, planet names and distances char name[LENGTH]; char planet[MAX][LENGTH]; int distance[MAX]; int DIST; int index = 0; while (index < MAX) { cout << index << endl; //I put this in here to show that it skipped the value 0 cin.getline(name,LENGTH); strcpy(planet[index],name); index++; } index = 0; for (index = 0; index < MAX; index++) { cout << endl << planet[index] << endl; } system("PAUSE"); return(0); } ============================================ -- This mail is a natural product.
