You can choose how Gmail notifies you when you get new emails. The types of notifications you can change depend on your device.
Turn Gmail notifications on or off
You get email notifications in Google Chrome, Firefox, or Safari after you sign in to Gmail and open it in your browser.
- On your computer, open Gmail.
- At the top right, click Settings
See all settings.
- Scroll down to "Desktop notifications."
- Select one of the following:
- New mail notifications on
- Important mail notifications on
- Mail notifications off.
- At the bottom of the page, click Save Changes.
Tips:
- If you use inbox categories and turn on notifications for new mail, you only get notifications about messages in your Primary category. Learn about inbox categories.
- When you turn on notifications for important mail, you get importance markers in Gmail.
I'm not getting any notifications
- You won't get notifications if you turn off all notifications for your browser.
- On Windows 10, notifications show up outside of your browser. Turn on your Chrome notifications in the Windows Action Center.
Turn notification sounds on or off
- Open Gmail.
- At the top right, click Settings
See all settings.
- Scroll to “Desktop notifications.”
- Click New mail notifications on or Important mail notifications on.
- Next to "Mail notification sounds," select a sound from the list.
- To turn off email notification sounds, select None.
- At the bottom of the page
click Save changes.
