This feature is also available through our early access testing program, Google Workspace Labs.
On Google Meet, you can use the "Generate a background" prompt to create background images using artificial intelligence. For example, you can ask Google Meet to create an illustration of a magical forest.
This feature is now available on desktop and Android devices. Your self-view shows a mirrored or inverted background but other meeting participants can find it in a correct orientation.
Important: To use generative backgrounds on an Android device, you must use one of these devices with an Android version 9 and up:
- Samsung Galaxy S9 and up
- Pixel 3 and up
- Other similar devices
- On your device, open Meet
.
- Select a meeting.
- At the bottom of your self-view, tap Effects
.
- Under the “Backgrounds” tab, tap Generate a background
.
- Enter a prompt. For example:
- "Luxurious living room interior"
- "A magical sunny forest glade"
Tip: For better results, try to include reference to a style or mood, a setting, and objects in the environment. For example: "A cozy coffee shop with flowers."
- (Optional) You can select a style to customize the background image you create.
- Tap Create samples to see several suggested background images.
- (Optional) After you tap Create samples, you can:
- Edit your prompt: To return to the initial page, at the bottom, with your previous prompt, tap Generate
.

- Tap one of the generated images to use as your background in your meeting.
- Tap Close
to exit "Generate a background" setup.
Tips:
- Background effects can increase your battery usage.
- If your battery is low, you can turn off the effects.
