Create background images with Gemini in Google Meet

Important:

This feature is also available through our early access testing program, Google Workspace Labs.

On Google Meet, you can use the "Generate a background" prompt to create background images using artificial intelligence. For example, you can ask Google Meet to create an illustration of a magical forest.

This feature is now available on desktop and Android devices. Your self-view shows a mirrored or inverted background but other meeting participants can find it in a correct orientation.

Important: To use generative backgrounds on an Android device, you must use one of these devices with an Android version 9 and up:

  • Samsung Galaxy S9 and up
  • Pixel 3 and up
  • Other similar devices
  1. On your device, open Meet Meet app.
  2. Select a meeting.
  3. At the bottom of your self-view, tap Effects .
  4. Under the “Backgrounds” tab, tap Generate a background .
  5. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • "Luxurious living room interior"
    • "A magical sunny forest glade"

Tip: For better results, try to include reference to a style or mood, a setting, and objects in the environment. For example: "A cozy coffee shop with flowers."

  6. (Optional) You can select a style to customize the background image you create.
  7. Tap Create samples to see several suggested background images.
  8. (Optional) After you tap Create samples, you can:
    • Edit your prompt: To return to the initial page, at the bottom, with your previous prompt, tap Generate .
  9. Tap one of the generated images to use as your background in your meeting.
  10. Tap Close to exit "Generate a background" setup.

Tips:

  • Background effects can increase your battery usage.
  • If your battery is low, you can turn off the effects.
