Today, Ukraine is marking National and #WorldChildrensDay together for the first time. Even as the war continues to devastate young lives, today's commemoration reaffirms the country's commitment to safeguard the rights, wellbeing and futures of all children. "Despite the tragic realities of war, child rights are not on hold. We must collectively protect and realize these rights, as our obligation to children. Today, Ukraine is standing up to nurture the country’s greatest asset – its children," said Munir Mammadzade, UNICEF Representative to Ukraine. UNICEF and the Government of Ukraine have partnered on initiatives to listen to children and empower them about their rights, and recognize child rights champions. "My Day. My Rights. My Lesson." – A nationwide lesson on children's rights is engaging more than 4,800 schools across the country to spark dialogue among teachers and children about their rights and what they mean in their daily lives. Conversations on children's rights went beyond classrooms: a UNICEF campaign featured influencers and decision-makers talking about the right that is most pertinent to them and encouraging others to stand up for children's rights. The inaugural "Family for every child. Better Care Awards", a partnership between The Coordination Center for Family Upbringing and Child Care Development, Olena Zelenska Foundation | Фундація Олени Зеленської, Centre for Social change and Behavioural economics and UNICEF, recognized extraordinary efforts by child rights champions to help ensure children enjoy their right to grow up in a loving and nurturing family environment. At the awarding ceremony, UNICEF's Director for Child Protection and Migration Sheema Sen Gupta thanked partners for advancing critical childcare system reforms in Ukraine. An exhibit about stories of children who were deprived of parental care who are now thriving in family environment was also launched at Ukraine's Parliament. The critical role of parents and caregivers in guiding and nurturing children on their rights was also recognized in a communication initiative "In the family, child rights are lived everyday". UNICEF and partners continue to do everything possible to mitigate the impact of the war on children but what every child in Ukraine needs is an unconditional and lasting peace, one in which their rights and wellbeing are protected and prioritized.
