Our Senior Surveyor, Tony Benton, recently had the opportunity to visit the CUPA PIZARRAS Quarry in Spain, one of our trusted suppliers and a world leader in natural slate production. The three-day event included a full day exploring the quarry itself, where Tony joined architects from Hardies, Shepherd, and AKD Developments for a hands-on look at how natural slate is sourced and prepared. The group were even given the chance to cut slate themselves straight from full blocks, which was a real highlight. They were driven through every stage of the operation, visiting the hand-cutting and packing stations as well as the machine-cutting areas where the raw rock is transformed into perfectly sized slates. A standout moment was trying out the VR headsets that showed the mine section of the quarry, which is now closed to visitors for safety reasons. Cupa Pizarras has been mining slate since 1892, with around 20 active quarries and 24 processing plants across Galicia and Castile and León. Together, they produce enough slate to cover 250 roofs every single day, continuing a proud tradition of quality craftsmanship that spans generations. Our Production Director, Brian McIntyre, was back in Edinburgh today for a final quality inspection at Warrender Park Terrace and caught up with members of the residents’ committee to walk through the completed works. This project included: ✅ Refelting two main flat roof gutters with a durable three-layer system ✅ Renewing all leadwork around chimneys, saddles, valleys, and catch pot gutters ✅ Re-slating with quality reclaimed Scotch slates ✅ Repairing leaking rear gutter joints With views stretching across the Meadows to Edinburgh Castle, this was a special one to complete, and great to see the residents so pleased with the results.
