🔉 In a softening market, MGAs must rethink underwriting. At the recent InsTech MGA Half-Day in London, our Managing Director and Co-Founder, Ben Laidlaw, outlined his take on how data-driven insights can guide smarter, faster decisions, which is becoming ever more important as we approach 2026. Ben highlighted a pivotal shift in underwriting: success now depends on identifying areas of loss and profit across portfolios - and strategically reallocating capacity. This isn’t reactive; it’s fast, fair, and proactive decision-making powered by data. 💬 “Our promise to MGAs is simple: we’ll respond quickly and fairly to what we see in the data. That means correcting portfolios where needed - but also doubling down on areas of profit.” At Carbon, we’ve built a tight, data-powered feedback loop that enables our underwriters to act with precision and agility, turning insight into action. In today’s market, this approach is no longer optional; it’s essential for resilience and growth. This is the kind of initiative that can take off when people are given the chance to make a difference outside of work. Through our volunteer leave, we encourage everyone to give back to causes that matter to them, anywhere in the world. We’re very proud to share our colleague’s story, Navdeep Dhuti, who took this opportunity to create his own #charity, making a real impact on the people in his community. 👏

Sometimes the biggest ideas start in the back of a cab. Mine started during the G20 Summit in South Africa, sharing a ride with Mohit Jain (Bafna). We were talking about how financial literacy in India is a metro privilege. The further you go from cities, the harder it is to find genuine financial education. Then Mohit asked: "What about our armed forces?" I paused. Honestly? I hadn't thought about it. But once I did, it was obvious. The people protecting our nation face unique financial challenges: - Constant transfers and postings - Families managing money across states - Target for investment frauds - Zero access to unbiased financial guidance And here's what broke my heart: Most "financial education" they get is just a sales pitch. That conversation became a mission. I called Wg Cdr Isha (Retd) → She connected me with the Indian Army in Punjab Arth Nirmiti → Brought world-class, agenda-free content Young Indians Chandigarh → Made it happen on ground Dhutti Charitable Foundation → My vehicle for change in rural India The moment that mattered? After the workshop, soldiers came up to thank us. Not for tips or tricks but for pure awareness. They told us how others had approached them before trying to sell something, but no one had simply tried to educate them. We covered insurance, wills, fraud protection, investment basics, family financial planning - everything they needed but rarely received. This is just Day 1. Next up: Entrepreneurship sessions for soldiers post-retirement. Financial literacy shouldn't end with service. Here's the truth: Impact isn't always about scale. Sometimes it's about reaching the forgotten ones. The people who give everything, but get little in return. From a cab ride to a classroom. From an idea to 200+ lives changed. Grateful to every single person who made this happen. #FinancialLiteracy #IndianArmy #SocialImpact #YoungIndians #BharatRising #DhuttiCharitableFoundation

A brilliant “Big Interview” feature in Insurance Day with our CEO, Jacqui Ferrier, diving into what sets Carbon apart. “It’s about understanding what’s driving performance as the market softens - maintaining discipline and focus on fundamentals and maintaining balance in growth." At Carbon, we’re not just navigating market cycles: we’re Delegating Differently. As Jacqui outlines, the real test for the industry is continuing to deliver returns in an increasingly soft market. What sets us apart is we have the magic of Graphene - by combining data-led underwriting with a culture of accountability and innovation, we’re ready for what’s next. Delegating Differently: How codification of claims data is transforming underwriting. “When you work in delegated authority, claims data is everywhere. Every syndicate handling a delegated book receives claims bordereaux, but the real difference lies in how that information is processed, coded and ultimately turned into insight,” explains our Head of Claims, Kirsty Coates ACII, in our latest article. Kirsty discusses how codifying claims data closes the feedback loop between claims and underwriting - giving underwriters clearer, more timely insights. She also emphasises that while codification and automation add speed and structure, the human element remains central, with every code and categorisation validated by Carbon’s adjusters and analysts.
