“Volunteerism is Africa’s quiet revolution, powered not by budgets but by people who choose to act.” This week the African Union launched the “State of Volunteerism in Africa” report together with #VSO and UNV. While development and aid financing continues to decline, the people of Africa remain its most valuable resource for leading the continent’s development. According to this report, if the value of volunteer activity was aggregated as a country, it would represent the fourth largest GDP on the continent. Today marks International Youth Day, and over the past year, VSO has continued to strengthen its global youth networks to inspire sustainable change at a local level. Youth volunteerism, leadership, and active citizenship is proudly promoted in all aspects of our work. With the support of over 5,000 members across 17 countries, these youth networks show that when young people are given the opportunity to use their voice, share both their expertise and experiences, and actively engage in the decision-making process, change can happen. In this piece, we provide a snapshot of what this work looks like across some of the countries that we are active in. Around the world, conflict is devasting people’s lives including on the Kenya-Ethiopia border. This area is mired by disputes, including tensions over access to water and grazing land for cattle, caused by persistent droughts and famine. However, VSO volunteers have helped bring communities together to build stronger, more cohesive societies and lasting peace.
