NextEnergy Capital is pleased to announce the energisation of its latest UK utility-scale solar asset, Hatherden (60MW), on behalf of NextEnergy UK I.   To date, NEUK I has rapidly deployed capital into Clean Power 2030-aligned critical energy infrastructure assets, more than doubling its total operational capacity over the last 12 months to 380MW. The Fund remains on track to achieve its 1GW target across solar PV and energy storage, contributing significantly to the UK’s renewable energy and security goals.   Ross Grier, NextEnergy Capital's Chief Investment Officer, commented: “Hatherden marks the seventh asset energised by NEUK I and demonstrates the continued momentum shown by the team at NEC. The Fund also has six assets under construction and a further six being prepared for construction. I am immensely proud of the team's achievements in deploying capital at scale and pace into the UK market and our continued contribution to energy security and decarbonisation.”   Launched in 2022, NEUK I closed at approximately £733 million, 50% above its target size, and has now allocated over 95% of its capital. Viva la France! Octopus Energy Generation's Sky Fund (ORI SCSp) has invested into a further 135MWs of onshore renewables in France, including the Fund's first investment into French groundmount solar. All assets are either operational or in mid to late stage construction. The transaction builds on Sky's existing portfolio of operational and development assets in France. Big thanks to the OEGen team led by Ismaël Tougui and supported by Laura Pasini, Veronica T., Victor LONGUET, Stefano Gabella, Sam Jones, David Hastings and Matthew Fosker OEGen's Sky fund is an open ended evergreen fund, which has raised over £1.5bn from institutional investors. Today, Reform UK urged developers not to take part in the next Contracts for Difference auction (AR7). It’s a headline-grabbing move — but the reality is more complicated. CfDs are at the heart of the UK’s renewables rollout. They offer developers a guaranteed price, shielding them from market volatility. But, fun, fact, they are not traditional subsidies — they’re private law contracts, signed with the Low Carbon Contracts Company (LCCC), a government-owned firm created to provide legal certainty. That distinction matters. Unlike public subsidies, private law contracts can be enforced in court. If a future government tried to renege, developers could sue. The structure was a deliberate response to the chaos of the 2000s, when countries like Spain pulled renewables support overnight and shattered investor confidence. The UK chose a different path — and it worked. That credibility has brought billions in investment. It lowered the cost of capital. It made the UK a global leader in offshore wind. Reform can of course change the rules for future auctions — but AR7 contracts signed today will be ironclad. If Reform do want leverage, planning and supply chain policy are more realistic tools. But even that has consequences. The same investors backing offshore wind are also funding the rest of the enegry system - including offshore oil and gas, nuclear, gas CCGTs etc. Spook them in one area and they will probably hike the cost of borrowing everywhere else. The CfD debate is maybe more complex than Reform realises. BUT the vibes are what matters for Reform, not the policies. The politics of Net Zero are changing — and Reform is tapping into that. For too long, politicians have overpromised that green investment would cut bills. That hasn’t always matched people’s lived experience — especially through the gas price crisis. Voters are frustrated. Even if Reform can't easily change existing CfD, they are tapping into real voter concern. Some learnings: - The cost of the equipment required for "Zero Bills" (Battery, Heat pump, PV panels) halved between 2010 to 2020, and more than halved again between 2020 and 2024 - Roof space is critical for the "Zero Bills" concept, important in new homes' design - Heatpumps are becoming more powerful, now achieving 60C +...opening up the market for retrofit potentially without expensive replacement of pipes/radiators - BtR sector is a key driver in implementing innovative energy solutions in the UK for new homes Christopher Gaze #innovation #netzero #singlefamilyhousing
