Two Notes on the Rescue of Moses in Exodus and in the Dura-Europos Synagogue Mural

This article is prompted by two details in the Dura-Europos synagogue mural (244/245 C.E.) depict... more This article is prompted by two details in the Dura-Europos synagogue mural (244/245 C.E.) depicting the rescue of Moses. The first part of the article studies the meaning of the Hebrew word 0 3 3 1 tēb ā that refers to the vessels in which Noah and Moses were saved. Translators and commentators consistently, and correctly, understand Noah's 0 3 3 1 tēb ā to be an ark, that is, a chest-shaped vessel. In the story of Moses, however, although some translations likewise render the word as 'ark' or a synonym of that, many follow the Vulgate and translate the word as 'basket,' a translation that has scant justification. This article follows the word from its likely origin in Egyptian, through its appearance in Hebrew and Aramaic and as a loan-word in Greek, Latin, Ethiopic, and Arabic, and shows that in every case where the meaning is clear, it refers to a chest or box. The Dura Europos mural, which includes the oldest known artistic depiction of the 0 3 3 1 tēb ā, also represents it as a chest, thus supporting the conclusion drawn from the philological evidence. Nowhere before the 4th century C.E. is the 0 3 3 1 tēb ā shown as a basket, a rendering that can safely be retired. The second part of the article examines another detail in the mural, a partly obliterated female figure who appears to be placing something in the Nile.
