The point of departure is a short definition of prestige: “The prestige of a person, an object or a cultural practice is higher, the more exclusive its bearers and the more widespread its estimation in the relevant group are”. This allows modern scholars to identify the cooccurrence of various aspects of prestige at state festivals as culturally significant markers. This not only pertains to the participants, above all the king of the Third Dynasty of Ur (21st c. BCE), the governors of his provinces and foreign messengers, but also concerns time, space, the ostentatious presentation of treasures, artistic performances etc. Interestingly, personal gift-giving is not included in the exchange of goods at state festivals, where goods from all over the country are collected and partly redistributed.

Die vorliegende Abhandlung ist zum Thema "Unterweltsvorstellung" in den neuassyrischen und babylonischen religiösen Traditionen gewidmet. Es ist allgemein bekannt, dass diese beiden Religionen mit den sumerischen religiösen Traditionen eng miteinander verschmolzen sind, wie die Übernahme von Göttern, Mythen und Legenden, gemeinsamen Kulthandlungen, vergleichbaren Götterkonzeptionen und übereinstimmend jenseitigen Vorstellungen bezeugen, gleichwohl hat es keine vereint theologische Konzeption oder gar ein gemeinsames Weltverständnis bezgl. der Gesetzmässigkeit zwischen ihnen gegeben 1. In der Sekundärliteratur wird das Thema Unterwelt in den mesopotamischen Religionen immer wieder angesprochen, insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit dem Gilgameš-Epos und dem Mythos vom Inanna-Ištar's Abstieg in die Unterwelt 2. Abstract: As in the fairy tales of various cultures, wise women and old wise women are found also in ancient Mesopotamian literature. Several goddesses are labelled as ‘old wise woman’. This designation is not just an indication of their age but implies the life experiences and wisdom that come with age. As ‘old wise woman’ a Goddess can help a ruler solve a riddle (Nisaba), explain the sexual act (Nunbaršegunu/Nisaba) and spinn a magic thread (Innana and Uttu). The aim of this article is to discuss the ancient Mesopotamian attestations of wise women and old wise women in a comparative perspective taking into account the central European fairy tales.
