About this audiobook
“Written in words so intimate, calm, kind, and immediate, this extraordinary book feels like a message from our very own heart….Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the most important voices of our time, and we have never needed to listen to him more than now.”
—Sogyal Rinpoche
Fear is destructive, a pervasive problem we all face. Vietnamese Buddhist Zen Master, poet, scholar, peace activist, and one of the foremost spiritual leaders in the world—a gifted teacher who was once nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize by Martin Luther King Jr.—Thich Nhat Hanh has written a powerful and practical strategic guide to overcoming our debilitating uncertainties and personal terrors. The New York Times said Hanh, “ranks second only to the Dalai Lama” as the Buddhist leader with the most influence in the West. In Fear: Essential Wisdom for Getting through the Storm, Hanh explores the origins of our fears, illuminating a path to finding peace and freedom from anxiety and offering powerful tools to help us eradicate it from our lives

I loved it! At times funny and at others touching, and always motivating in a relatable, simple way. I already enjoy Mel Robbins' podcast, so if you're a fan I would highly recommend. Giving 4 stars because it's not necessarily the MOST groundbreaking self help book, but personally I do think it has a place in the genre. And, I actually am implementing the high five habit, so I think that's a success!1 person found this helpful

It reiterates some concepts from the book Silence by the same author, where he discusses mindfulness and its importance, providing various guidelines on how to practice it. He describes mindfulness as a tool to avoid fear, which, according to the author and his philosophy, is what distances us from love and happiness. He also presents the concept of the unborn and the undying, which ultimately represents one of the greatest fears we experience as human beings, but from his perspective, it is an unnecessary fear, as death does not truly exist in the way we conceive it. Personally, I do not agree with everything that this book assumes, but I do believe it is very useful regarding techniques for self-knowledge, meditation, and concentration. This is a good book, and there is some essential wisdom in it. However, I also believe that it is not always easy to glean the wisdom from the more general stuff that is written in the book.
I have read "The Miracle of Mindfulness" and "Silence", and these are outstanding books.
What I felt, in this one, is that he skirted the issue of fear. Fear runs deep, and while mindfulness breathing can help, it is not the whole solution at times. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5

Hanh writes simply enough for anyone to understand the concept of mindfulness and gives some simple, straight-forward ways to develop it. He even relates some of what he shares to Christian tracings. I especially appreciate what he says about peace and his emphasis of living so as to bring happiness to others. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5
