Der Vokal       Vowels

The German alphabet, just like the English, has five main vowels: A E I O U

A (a) as a in hard

E (e) as ay in say

I (i) as i in ink

O (o) as o in open

U (u) like oo in boot.

{ ‘ ‘ } Umlaut - mutated vowel

The German umlaut is recognisable by 2 little dots above a letter. The German umlaut is found on 3 letters a, o and u, umlauts are used to signify a certain sound. Whenever the use of umlauts is not possible e.g. for technical reasons, you can use extra e instead of Umlaut.

For Example : ae = ä, oe= ö, ue = ü.

Ä (ä) - similar to ‘ai’ in ‘air’

O (o) – as o in open

Ö (ö) - like ur in the word burn

U (u) - like oo in boot.

Ü (ü) - like ‘y’ in ‘Tyrell’

German has an additional character ‘ß’, which is either called eszet. It sounds exactly like ss. You can also use ss instead of ‘ß’,

Das Nomen       Noun

German nouns (a person, place or thing, Substantive) always begin with a CAPITAL letter!

Bestimmter Artikel       Definite Article

In English you can refer the definite article as the and In German there are three definite articles der, die, das. They are also placed before the noun and each of the definite articles has a gender.

der – is placed before all masculine nouns.

der Kuli – the ballpoint pen

die – is placed before all feminine nouns

die Maschine – the machine

das - is placed before all neuter nouns.

Die is also used for plural nouns. German plurals are normally formed by adding -en or -er to the noun.

Unbestimmter Artikel       Indefinite Article

Indefinite articles refer to nouns in a unspecified persons, objects etc. German has two indefinite articles ein for masculine - and neuter -gender words and eine for feminine -gender words.

Ein - is placed before all masculine - and neuter -nouns

ein Haus – a house

ein Mann - a man

Eine - is placed before all feminine nouns.

If the Noun is feminine or plural we have to add an extra e.

Das ist mein Auto.

This is my Car.

Das ist dein Tee.

Das ist unsere Wohnung.

Nomantive is always the subject of a sentence. The person or thing which performs an action, defined by the verb.

Das ist ein Haus.

She is a secretary.
