1. INTRODUCTION

Congratulations on acquiring your new puppy! Now that you have him, you may feel at odds as to how he should be trained and raised, and you may also feel a bit overwhelmed by his misbehavior. The truth is that many of your puppy’s behaviors are natural, but problematic for you. After all, how much fun is it having your hands nipped while you play with your puppy? How much fun is it finding your favorite pair of shoes chewed to pieces? Well, puppies play with the artillery they have—paws and teeth! Puppies are also extremely social animals, so greeting comes naturally to them, even if it means jumping up on people! Because they are so social, they don’t naturally cope well with being alone for long periods of time. When they are, it is to be expected that they will engage in some destructive behavior, either because they’re bored or because they become anxious.
