Habits For Success - Daily Practices That Will Transform Your Life - Denton Baxter
Chapter 1: Habits – Meaning, Characteristics, And Role
Habit can be explained to be the evidence of the practice of one’s preferences. We are sometimes motivated to do different things by our habits, just as we are inspired to do different things by our instincts. Living organisms acquire habits, which can be found in both humans and animals. Habits make us yearn for more of a particular past experience, and one could argue that habit is man's second nature.
What Is A Habit, Exactly?
A habit is simply a behavior that is repeated on a regular basis. When it comes to behavior, it could be a way of lifestyle, a routine, or an action. Almost everything you do on a regular and consistent basis without thinking about it is a habit. Because habits are behaviors and rituals that we perform spontaneously, they assist us in performing necessary activities such as following the same routes every day, getting dressed for work, taking a shower, and brushing our teeth. Because they help free up enabling resources for our brain, our unconscious habits assist us in deciding what to make for dinner, solving problems, or performing other more complex tasks. Habits can be bad for us, good for us, or ones that have been a part of our lives for so long that we don't even notice them, such as tooth brushing and shoelace tying. Every day, we activate several habits, and we all have habits.
Characteristics Of Habit
Habits have four common characteristics: uniformity, facility, interest, and attention independence.
i. Uniformity
If you examine your walking, sleeping, talking, or other activities, you will notice that there is usually an underlying specific habit. This is due to the fact that habits bring uniformity to our activities.
ii. Facility
Habit has the tendency to aid us in the performance of an activity. Assume you began learning to play the guitar. Despite the pain you experienced while learning, you'll realize that it will become easier for you once you've formed the habit.
iii. Interest
The primary core of habit is interest. Let's stick with the guitar analogy. Let's say you're having difficulty with guitar training because you have sore fingers, but once you've found your proper grip and formed the habit of correct finger placement, you'll find it more enjoyable to play the guitar.
iv. Independence Of Attention
There are several things that do not necessitate our attention, but we still do them out of habit.
Why Are Habits Important To Our Health?
The habits you develop can either increase or decrease your chances of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Habits are critical to our health. If you want to promote longevity and improve the quality of your life, it's critical that you practice good and beneficial habits like exercising regularly and eating healthily. When you cultivate bad habits such as low activity levels, excessive fast-food consumption, and increased consumption of sugary soft drinks, on the other hand, you run the risk of developing diabetes, obesity, or other chronic
