How to create an irresistible portfolio without real-life experience
A strong portfolio can make a difference between employers taking you seriously and giving you a call vs dumping your CV in the bin.
So the question is how do you create a portfolio that makes you a serious competitor and increase your chances of getting the job?
Let me teach you one of the best ways to accomplish this. In the most authentic way.
See, when you’re working as a developer you’re assigned and then explained the task, then you’re left by yourself. There’s nowhere to go, nowhere to hide. You have to finish the task somehow, often you won’t even have prior understanding of the system or the codebase or a senior developer to guide you.
But this imperfect environment is what will equip you with the real world experience and boost your confidence needed to conquer bigger things and become a better developer. That is only if you already have the job.
The good news is, you don't need a job to learn and improve yourself. What I'm about to teach you will unlock many doors in many different ways.
So allow me to introduce you to the best strategy I know to gain real world experience and build a top quality portfolio, without a job!
Codecanyon
For those who don’t know Codecanyon it’s a place to buy themes/designs/scripts etc.. for example if you’re into Real Estate
business you can go to Codecanyon and buy a Real Estate
site. Download it, put it on your server and you’re ready to go!
It was quite interesting that I could look at the live preview of the sites as well as interact with the functionality in the admin panel.
So I purchased a script called Laravel CRM
CRM stands for Customer Relation Management
. It's like Salesforce. You can add Customers and their details, see what sort of conversation you’ve been having with them, schedule meetings, create tasks etc..
After purchasing and setting the site locally I started to try and understand how each part of the site worked, read documentation several times, analyze the source code etc..
2 months later my curiosity was gone.. I got bored of the script. Literally stopped everything to do with web development. I was just overwhelmed with the amount of sh*t I didn’t know!
The BIG idea!
An idea came to my mind.. Now that I have access to the source of the website...
What if I create an exact site? Won’t that give me real world experience? And if I get stuck I can always look at the source code? And the more complicated the site
