    I. Introduction

    1.1. History of Javanese Society

The history of Javanese society is rich with cultural, religious, and social influences that have shaped their identity to this day. The blend of Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic values, along with the local wisdom of the Javanese people, has created a unique culture that plays a significant role not only in the social life of the Javanese but also in the formation of the Indonesian national identity as a whole. With such a deep and diverse cultural heritage, the Javanese continue to uphold their traditions while adapting to the changing times.

As one of the largest ethnic groups in Indonesia, the Javanese have a long and varied history that spans thousands of years, shaping a culture and social structure that remains influential today. The history of Javanese society can be traced through various significant events, kingdoms, and social developments that occurred on the island of Java, which has been a center of civilization since ancient times. Historical footprints are etched in various great kingdoms such as the Majapahit Kingdom, Mataram, and other smaller kingdoms that played crucial roles in shaping the culture, governance systems, and daily life of the Javanese.

The Majapahit Kingdom, which existed from the 13th to the 16th century, is known as one of the largest and most powerful kingdoms in Southeast Asia. Its influence on the development of Javanese culture is profound, reflected in art, literature, architecture, and governance. Majapahit was also recognized as a highly advanced trading center, establishing connections with various countries in Asia, such as China and India. The governance system implemented by this kingdom significantly impacted the social structure of Javanese society at that time. Under Majapahit's rule, the Javanese experienced advancements in various aspects of life, including religion, art, and trade.

The Mataram Kingdom, which emerged after the fall of Majapahit, also had a significant impact on the history of Javanese society. Mataram is divided into two periods: Ancient Mataram and Islamic Mataram. Ancient Mataram, centered around Central Java, is known for its cultural achievements, such as the construction of major temples, including Borobudur and Prambanan, which reflect Hindu and Buddhist influences. Meanwhile, Islamic Mataram, which arose in the 16th century under the leadership of Sultan Agung, played a crucial role in the spread of Islam in Java and the formation of a distinct religious identity among the Javanese that persists to this day.

In addition, there were various smaller kingdoms that emerged in different parts of Java, such as the Sultanate of Demak, Cirebon, and Surakarta, each contributing to the formation of local culture and the socio-economic development of Javanese society.

Initially, Javanese society lived in a highly structured social pattern, characterized by clear class divisions consisting of nobility, farmers, and commoners. This social structure was heavily influenced by the royal system, which had a strict hierarchy, with the king or sultan at the center of power, while other social classes,
