IN THE EARLIEST STAGES of human history, indigenous cultures relied on the stars, moon, and sun to navigate their surroundings, mark the passage of time, and predict seasonal changes. Nomadic hunter-gatherer societies such as the Indigenous peoples of North America, the Aboriginal peoples of Australia, and the San people of southern Africa developed intricate knowledge of the night sky, using constellations as guides for navigation and as markers for seasonal migrations. The movements of celestial bodies were woven into oral traditions, myths, and cultural practices, with the stars serving as celestial markers of time and place.

As human societies transitioned from nomadic lifestyles to settled agricultural communities, the study of celestial phenomena became increasingly important for understanding agricultural cycles, predicting weather patterns, and determining the most auspicious times for planting, harvesting, and religious ceremonies. Ancient indigenous cultures such as the Sumerians of Mesopotamia, the Egyptians of the Nile Valley, and the Indus Valley civilization in present-day Pakistan developed complex astronomical systems and observational techniques to track the movements of celestial bodies and interpret their significance for agriculture, governance, and religious life.

In Mesopotamia, often considered the cradle of civilization, the Sumerians developed one of the earliest known astrological systems, based on the movements of the moon and planets across the zodiacal belt. Sumerian priests, known as the ummanu, observed celestial phenomena and recorded their observations on clay tablets, which served as celestial almanacs for predicting future events and guiding religious rituals. The Babylonians, who inherited the knowledge of the Sumerians, further refined their astrological practices, developing sophisticated methods of divination and casting horoscopes based on the positions of celestial bodies at the time of a person's birth.

In ancient Egypt, the study of astronomy and astrology was closely intertwined with religious beliefs and practices. The Egyptians developed elaborate mythologies and rituals centered around the sun god Ra, who was believed to traverse the sky in a solar barque, symbolizing
