News - CarX Street adds official Linux and Steam Deck support
By EWG, 12 Aug 2025 at 7:19 am UTC

The second paragraph in the OP makes me want to buy it. Although, I do wholeheartedly agree with @Cley_Fey ....

I wonder why they can't offer two versions to install. One that is offline other than LAN without any weird anti-cheat stuff and one that has online multiplayer functions with EAC.

It seems like it would be easy for devs to build+ship a "vanilla version". They ought to consider that from the very beginning and make it standard practice! While I am against the notion of anything potentionally intrusive, I also realize that there are too many people and bots out there aiming to exploit only for self-gain.

News - Debian 13 trixie released with Linux kernel 6.12
By g000h, 11 Aug 2025 at 11:00 pm UTC

I've been using Debian 13 Trixie (i.e. testing) for the past year, before the recent shift to the stable branch. You get lots of rolling-distribution 'need to have the latest software' afficionados moaning that Debian isn't up-to-date enough for them. Rather it is more the case that they don't comprehend that they can run Debian Testing or Debian Unstable, and get more up-to-date stuff (than the stable branch) without having to wait for it.

On that note, I generally find that for Steam gaming, the stable branch of Debian (kernel, graphics driver) works fine and there is no need for more recent software to enjoy modern games.

@dpanther what is the difference with siduction compared to just running sid?

If only Debian stable came with optional backports of the Plasma desktop, then I would marry it and love it forever. emoji

Linux version of Easy Anti Cheat is not kernel level
Still intrusive, and still not welcome for single player games, or LAN with friends. Will skip this title; would have been interested otherwise.
But thank you everyone for including and discussing this information that is so important to dozens, nay hundreds, of us.

News - The Minecraft-like free and open source game VoxeLibre v0.90 brings dynamic settings and new fire spreading
By kneekoo, 11 Aug 2025 at 8:46 pm UTC

Thanks for covering this. :) What I find the most exciting for the early game is having enchanted deepslate pickaxes. They break the same blocks as stone pickaxes, so they're only meant for the basics (coal, iron, copper).

The deepslate tools have a 50% chance to be enchanted at craft time - on the crafting table - with a level-1 enchantment. And to make sure they're not overpowered, they can only be upgraded to level-2 enchantments on the anvil. The available enchantments are those that would also be possible on an enchantment table, so in the case of a pickaxe that's Efficiency, Unbreaking, Silk Touch and Fortune.

So now we can get a deepslate pickaxe with Unbreaking II, Efficiency II and Fortune II without an enchantment table. Sweet! :D It will probably take you about 2 stacks of deepslate to get all of these on a single pickaxes, but it really pays off.

By the way, the combat and spawning rebalancing are especially great for newbies and makes fighting hostiles less tedious. So it all adds up to a much friendlier start for less experienced players.

It'd be even better if it was possible to run the game in single player with having to install some anti-cheat solution, though.

Afaik, native Linux version of Easy Anti Cheat is not kernel level.

News - Oceaneers is a survival-crafting adventure set in a flooded world of sinking islands
By hell0, 11 Aug 2025 at 7:22 pm UTC

Got in the beta and gave it a whirl. The art looks great, reminiscent of klei (don't starve, oxygen not included) and the game runs perfectly fine on desktop.

Aside from that, there is sadly not much to say after over 3h. The gameplay so far is not great about (slow paced and a lot of micro management) and the cool island-related features are either locked in the current build or further along.

Nice! I'll have to see about updating soon. I guess it's been about ten years now, since I switched from Linux Mint Debian Edition in 2015 if I remember correctly. emoji

What's your favourite new feature in Debian 13?
Not having to worry about Y2K38, I guess…? emoji I dunno, I read the release notes and nothing particularly stood out as important to me personally. RISC-V support is neat, I suppose. Could be interesting to see where that goes.

Guide - Why some games on Linux, SteamOS / Steam Deck have broken videos and what you can do
By doragasu, 11 Aug 2025 at 6:06 pm UTC

I had that problem on some games. Most notable "The Nonary Games", that by default lacks sound on videos, and while experimenting with some other Proton versions, I had that problem. Even with Proton GE, I got some videos to work but not all, that is a shame because I love this game and some videos are a must to follow the story.

Guide - Why some games on Linux, SteamOS / Steam Deck have broken videos and what you can do
By Vigil, 11 Aug 2025 at 6:00 pm UTC

To actually get those videos downloaded with the game, you need to ensure you have the Shader Pre-Caching system enabled, as it contains game shaders to improve performance and the re-encoded videos too.

Does that mean that if shader pre-caching is disabled, such videos won't be re-encoded on the fly, so enabling it is the only way to see them?

I am worried about games that have such videos but which are used for something like a cut scene, where nothing plays, not even the test pattern. When that happens, you've no idea that there even was a cut scene supposed to play, so you're missing out.

News - Change the world around you with unique spells in the colourful puzzle game Rhell: Warped Worlds & Troubled Times
By Anza, 11 Aug 2025 at 5:05 pm UTC

I tried the demo and it's mostly just frustrating.

Fell into a river. There were some places that looked like they were jumping high. They turned to have invisible walls. Had to suicide at waterfall.

Also got stuck at puzzle for a while which actually just required another spell. That's more my fault.

What actually forced me to quit was non existent camera control. It at least seems that there's no way to turn the camera, so some jumping puzzles are very difficult as you can't see what you're doing.

In addition to forming spells feels bit of chore. Especially if you need to switch back and forth between two.

Though I do feel that I should have another go at one of the puzzles...

I actually switched my mothers computer to Debian. Ubuntu started advertising their paid subscription and whole thing got too confusing for somebody who just wants to use the computer for simple stuff.

Also I have Debian in a laptop. Too bad I forgot the encryption password, so might as well upgrade to 13 if I can figure out use case for the laptop.
