Excel’s sorting feature is essential for organizing vast datasets, with worksheets holding up to 17 million cells. Sorting by numbers either in ascending (smallest to largest) or descending (largest to smallest) order helps arrange data like student lists or financial figures systematically.

Steps to Sort by Number

Let's take sample data first!

So this is a data of a classroom, and we want to organize the data by roll number wise(ascending order).

Step 1: Select the cell in the column you want to sort. So I will select column B2 in this example.

Step 2: Then click on the Data tab and then select go to Sort option.

Step 3: Now here you will find the two options one is Sort Largest to Smallest and Sort Smallest to Largest. Just click on the option Smallest to Largest, and your work is done.

Now you can see that our data is arranged in ascending order. This is very simple! Isn't it? In excel we can arrange the data by using numbers, alphabets data or time. Also, we can custom list by format, including cell color, font color, or icon set.
