- Identify the Whole Number: Writing a number in standard form starts with the whole number that one wants to convert.
- Place the Number in Decimal Form: A whole number in standard form means a number in decimal form which is normally depicted as an expanded form. For instance; if your whole number is 4500
- Convert to Scientific Notation (if applicable): If the number you are going to write is large, you have to express it in the scientific notation to write in the standard form. For example, 4500 can be written as 4. 5×103.
- Final Standard Form:
- For Small Numbers: If the whole number is small (like 50), it can be written simply as 50.
- For Large Numbers: If it is a large number then write it in the correct scientific notation and not in the standard form. 4. 5×103 for 4500.
Whole number is defined as the subset of the number system that consists of all positive integers including 0. Positive numbers that include zero, which counts from 0 to infinity. These numbers do not include fractions or decimals. Whole numbers are represented by ‘W’.
The only constituents of natural numbers including zero are whole numbers. The subset of whole numbers is given by {0,1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7…….}, the set of whole numbers does not include fractions, decimals, and negative integers.
The set of counting numbers starts from 1 and on the other hand, natural numbers along with zero (0) form a set, referred to as whole numbers. Counting numbers also considered as a whole number
Standard Form of Whole Numbers
The representation of large numbers or small numbers in an easy form is termed the standard form of numbers. To represent numbers in standard form we use exponents.
Decimal numbers are one of the forms of fractions. Some of the fractions give decimal numbers which have numbers after decimal at thousandths, hundredths, or tenths place. But sometimes fractions give a big decimal number. To represent such big numbers we use standard forms, which are also stated as Scientific notation.
The numbers that can be represented in the form of p/q, where p and q are both integers are termed as Rational numbers.
For example, 2/10, 4/6, 8/9, etc.
How to write a whole number in standard form?
There are some steps to represent the number in standard form
Step 1: Write the first number from the given number.
Step 2: Add the decimal point after the first number.
Step 3: Count the number of digits after the first number or decimal from the given number and write it in the power of 10.
For Example
42300000000 is the number. Thus the standard form of a number is obtained as follows:
Step 1: The first number is 4
Step 2: Adding the decimal point after 4, it becomes “4.”
Step 3: The number of digits after 4 is 10.
Hence, the standard form of 42300000000 is 4.23 × 1010.
Example 2: Write 2550 in standard form
Solution:
Step 1: The first number is 2
Step 2: Adding the decimal point after 2, it becomes “2.”
Step 3: The number of digits after 2 is 3.
Hence, the standard form of 2550 is 2.55 × 103.
Sample Problems
Question 1: How to write 17 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 17
To write the whole number 17 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 17 by 10, we get
= (17/10) × 10
= 1.7× 101 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 17 = 1.7× 10
Question 2: How to write 1250 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 1250
To write the whole number 1250 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 1250 by 1000, we get
= (1250/1000) × 1000
= 1.250 × 103 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 1250 = 1.250 × 103
Question 3: How to write 225 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 225
To write the whole number 225 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 225 by 100, we get
= (225/100) × 100
= 2.25 × 102 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 225 = 2.25 × 102.
Question 4: How to write 22 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 22
To write the whole number 22 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 22 by 10, we get
= (22/10) × 10
= 2.2× 101 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 22 = 2.2× 10
Question 5: How to write 12 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 12
To write the whole number 12 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 12 by 10, we get
= (12/10) × 10
= 1.2× 101 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 12 = 1.2× 10
Question 6: How to write 400 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 400
To write the whole number 400 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 400 by 100, we get
= (400/100) × 100
= 4× 102 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 400 = 4 × 102
Question 7: How to write 175 whole numbers in the standard form?
Solution:
Here Given whole number is 175
To write the whole number 175 in standard form= ?
By Multiplying and dividing 175 by 100, we get
= (175/100) × 100
= 1.75 × 102 {Here only one number will be held before decimal point that is 1}
Therefore the standard form of the number 175 = 1.75 × 102
