My Journey to Securing a Full-Time Role at JP Morgan

JP Morgan visits our campus VIT, Pune every year for recruitment. The selection process for a full-time role consists of three main steps:

1. Online Coding Test

2. Online AI-Based Interview

3. Code for Good Hackathon

Let me share the details of each step and how I secured the full-time role at JP Morgan.

Registration Process

The company visited our campus on 28th March 2024. We were required to register for the job offer through both the TPO portal and the company's website. Note that separate links are provided for Full-Time and Summer Intern roles, and registering for the correct one is compulsory.

However, I faced an issue as I did not receive the test link after registering. I promptly emailed JP Morgan at the address provided in the registration confirmation email, informing them about the issue. Within 5 days, they sent me the test link.

  • Tip: If you encounter any issues during the process, do not hesitate to contact JP Morgan's team. They are quick to resolve doubts or concerns. Some of my friends who did not email them never received the test link.

Step 1: Online Coding Test

This test primarily assesses Data Structures and Algorithms (DSA) skills. It consisted of two DSA questions at the LeetCode Easy-Medium level, and the total duration was 60 minutes.

The two questions I encountered were:

1. Array Problem

Similar to the Chocolate Distribution Problem.

2. String Problem

The question involved comparing two strings and finding some differences between them.

Tips for the Test:

  • Focus on solving Easy-Medium problems on LeetCode.
  • Try to complete both questions within 30 minutes, as this significantly improves your chances of selection.
  • Aim to pass all test cases for both questions.

The test was conducted in the first week of April, and my test slot was between 9th April and 11th April. After completing the test, I received the link for the HireVue interview on 19th April, about 10–15 days later.

Step 2: Online AI-Based Interview

This interview was conducted on the HireVue platform, where I was asked two HR-style questions. The process required recording a 3-minute video response for each question. You are given 2–3 attempts to record each answer.

The two questions were:

1. Tell us about a time when you changed your communication approach to better convey an idea.

2. Describe a recent experience of making a speech or presentation.

Tips for the AI-Based Interview:

  • Practice answering similar questions before recording.
  • Answer confidently, using examples from your own experiences.
  • Use keywords that align with JP Morgan's goals and mission.
  • Dress formally and maintain a clear, composed tone while speaking.

It is important to complete this interview within 2–3 days of receiving the link. I received the hackathon selection results on 30th May.

Step 3: Code for Good Hackathon

The Code for Good Hackathon is the final step in the process. This 24-hour hackathon involves working in a randomly assigned team of 6–7 students from different colleges. Teams are given a problem statement and must develop a full-stack solution, such as a web or mobile application.

Each team is assigned 2-4 mentors who guide and evaluate your performance throughout the event. My team received a problem statement to develop an Inventory Management System. We chose React for the frontend and FastAPI for the backend.

Although I was confident in backend development, I had not worked with FastAPI before. I spent some time understanding it but eventually shifted my focus to the frontend, where I contributed to web page creation.

Key Takeaways for Hackathons:

  • Be polite, patient, and listen to your teammates.
  • Contribute actively in any way possible, even if it’s outside your primary skill set.
  • Focus on teamwork and collaboration, as these are closely observed.
  • The hackathon took place on 15th–16th June 2024. It’s also essential to maintain a LinkedIn profile and a portfolio website to showcase your achievements and experiences.

Results

JP Morgan generally releases results within 1.5 months of the hackathon. However, since all hackathons for both full-time and summer interns were conducted offline this year, results were delayed and announced on 27th August 2024.

Final Tips

  • Focus on one step at a time—prepare for the online test first, then the interview, and finally the hackathon.
  • Be polite and collaborative with your team during the hackathon.
  • Maintain a strong LinkedIn profile and showcase your skills and projects.
  • Leverage online resources, such as YouTube videos and articles, to prepare for each step.
