it was amazing

Wow. Just...wow. Why have I never read this before? Ray Bradbury has written an amazing, lyrical, spooky-as-hell set of pieces that all add up to something much more. Some are very brief, mere sketches of events. Others are full-length short stories.

Dan Schwent 12 people seems like a shallow gene pool to me.

Megan Baxter Yeah, that's what I thought.

Wanda Pedersen I just discovered Ray Bradbury last year--I haven't read the Martian Chronicles yet, but you've made me anxious to get into it!

Megan Baxter I was really blown away. For some reason, I think I was expecting harder sf, instead of what I got.

I'm getting on a plane in a few days and it will be a long flight. I plan to pack The Martian Chronicles!

mark monday nice review! i just finished this one last night, and loved it.

Megan Baxter Perhaps, but given who the character is, and that we have every evidence that he and his wife are intelligent and well-educated, this should at least cross their minds at some point. Or it would have bothered me less if it had.

Also the notion that with that limited a starting point, monogamy would be possible, let alone advisable.

They're quibbles, and didn't take away from the story as a whole, but it certainly stood out to me.

Will Byrnes TMC is one of the all-time greats. Love your line I never sat easily while reading The Martian Chronicles.

Tom Strange, this is one of those books that I think I read decades ago, but remember nothing about, yet have been weirdly haunted by (or was that "Dandelion Wine"??) anyway, you make me want to (re)read it, as the case may be.

Ana Why have I never read this before? That is exactly what I first thought when I came across this magical book.

Margitte I have never considered reading this kind of book, but might do so now.

Megan Baxter Science fiction in general? This is a really excellent book, no matter what your preferences, I think.

Science fiction in general, yes. It never fascinated me. It might be due to not being interested in it since childhood - science is not my thing.

Philip Just read your Smorgasbook review, and wanted to comment on YOUR comment about the irrationality of everyone returning to fight a war on Earth. I felt the same at first, but then realized that most of the stories about the war - "The Silent Towns," "The Long Years" and "The Million-Year Picnic" - were written between 1946-49, not long after WWII when American men and women had flocked to fight "the Good War," and before the cynicism about American military adventurism that began with Korea in 1950 and more-or-less continues to this day. Bradbury doesn't give any details about the Earth War, but with the Martian colonists largely American I always pictured this as the expected-at-the-time inevitable clash between the U.S. and "godless Communism." In any case, a vastly different mentality at the time...
