Our third Gen-3 satellite delivered its first very high-resolution images less than 24 hours following a successful launch this month.   “BlackSky’s third Gen-3 unit has delivered incredible initial image quality at unprecedented speed—less than one day from launch,” said Brian OToole, BlackSky CEO. “Customers no longer have to wait months typically associated with traditional commissioning timelines. BlackSky’s rapid commissioning process places tasking capacity into customers’ hands quickly and increases the overall operational life of each satellite as they come online sooner.” With remarkable clarity, the new Gen-3 satellite has delivered imagery detailing vehicles, maritime vessels, and aircraft of various sizes, as well as individual people and their shadows. Image quality is expected to increase as final calibrations become complete, and the satellite enters its final operational altitude. BlackSky partnered with Reuters in a visual investigation, collecting high-cadence, time-diverse imagery and AI-enabled vessel detection analytics that detailed the role civilian vessels played in Chinese maritime exercises this summer. In August, a series of five images collected over six hours documented an active amphibious landing drill, revealing cargo vessels offloading vehicles onto shore for the first time and participation of a self-propelled temporary pier system not seen active since 2023. BlackSky Gen-3 captured the gap left by the partially collapsed Hongqi bridge in China's Sichuan province. According to reports, landslides led to the collapse of the bridge, which was just completed earlier this year.
