At Space Tech Expo Europe, Blue Cubed’s CTO Ryan Kingsbury highlighted why optical communications are becoming essential as RF systems reach limits from congestion and interference. With standards emerging and new optical networks coming online, commercial lasercom adoption is accelerating. Ryan called out a growing gap in smallsat missions: compute and storage keep advancing, but comms haven’t kept pace. Our Cobalt optical communications terminal is built to close that gap with a compact, power-efficient terminal for high-rate crosslinks and downlinks. He emphasized how ease-of-integration and short lead times are becoming a key advantage. Ethernet-native, self-contained terminals enable faster integration and more flexible mission architectures. I’m speaking this afternoon at Space Tech Expo Europe about one of the biggest shifts underway in satellite communications: the move from RF architectures to compact, interoperable optical terminals. Join me at 13:00 on the Connectivity Stage (Hall 6) for “Optical Communication – Enabling High-Speed, Security, and Interoperability.” I’ll share insights from our work at Blue Cubed, including: 🔹 Why the industry is moving from crowded RF spectrum toward secure, high-throughput laser links 🔹 What’s held back widespread commercial adoption — and why that’s now changing 🔹 How low-SWaP, easy-to-integrate terminals like our 5 kg Cobalt OCT open up new mission concepts for small satellites 🔹 The emerging optical ecosystem: SDA, ESA ESTOL, commercial backhaul networks, and sovereign constellations If you’re in Bremen, I’d love to see you there and talk about where optical crosslinks are headed next. #SpaceTechExpo #Lasercom #OpticalCommunications #OISL #Smallsat #BlueCubed
