This position reports to the Director of Communications. 📣 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS Here’s what you’ll dive into: ✏️ Create standout communication materials—news releases, speeches, Op-Eds, statements, talking points, and more. 📈 Build proactive relationships with local, regional, and national media to secure meaningful coverage—and track your wins. 🗞️ Manage daily media relations by responding to inquiries, monitoring coverage, preparing summaries, and keeping the public informed with accuracy. 🤝 Foster strong, trusted connections with media partners while turning complex topics into clear, accessible explanations. 🎬 Plan and lead press conferences, media events, and briefings for City Council—handling logistics, materials, and outreach. 🏛️ Provide on-the-ground media support at City Council meetings, City events, and public engagements. 🌐 Support digital storytelling for the Mayor’s Office—creating content for news, web, and social media that aligns with our communication strategy. 🔎 Help maintain timely, accurate web content on priority topics. ✔️ Perform other duties as assigned. 🎓 EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE This role requires: A Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, English, Marketing, or a related field. 5–7 years of directly related experience in media relations, communications, marketing, or public relations. This morning, we proudly hosted a special breakfast to recognize and celebrate the dedication, service, and sacrifice of our veteran employees. Their commitment to our nation and to the City of Newport News exemplifies leadership, integrity, and teamwork.   Deputy City Director and Army veteran Ralph "Bo" Clayton welcomed the veterans and the breakfast featured resources from the Department of Veteran's Affairs. Attendees spent time meeting and networking with fellow vets. This events kicks off the creation of our Veteran Employee and Spouses Employee Resource Group (ERG). City of Newport News Human Resources, Human Services, and Four Oaks Day Center were honored to participate in the “Homeless Veteran Stand Down” event—dedicated to supporting homeless Veterans, their families, and those at risk of homelessness. We extend our sincere appreciation to the Hampton VA Medical Center (VAMC) and the City of Hampton’s Military Affairs Committee (MAC) for the invitation to take part in this meaningful and impactful community initiative. The event brought together a wide range of resources, agencies, Veterans organizations, and community partners offering essential support and services. Attendees had access to transportation, meals, showers, haircuts, clothing, VA medical services, flu shots, community resources, employment and job search assistance, residential treatment, and housing placement for homeless and at-risk Veterans. This collaborative event, open to the entire community, once again demonstrated the power of partnership, compassion, and commitment in improving the lives of our Veterans.
