#GlobalCitizenNOW: Johannesburg, our first-ever summit on the African continent, marked the culmination of the year-long Scaling Up Renewables in Africa campaign, closing with breakthrough pledges that will help unlock electricity access for over 17.5 million homes and deliver 26.8 gigawatts of clean energy across the continent by 2030. The event united governments, investors, and citizens together to ignite momentum and build a more resilient energy future for the continent. Co-chaired in partnership with Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa, President of the Republic of South Africa, the 12-month SURA campaign secured pledges that will help with efforts to quadruple Africa’s renewable energy capacity by 2030. Through a series of new, time-bound financial and policy commitments, leaders demonstrated they were ready to kickstart momentum, underscoring the urgent need to act at a moment when the continent’s rapid population growth, unmet energy needs, and escalating climate impacts are intensifying. Working to End Extreme Poverty NOW ⭕️ Tune in to Global Citizen Festival on Sept. 27
About us
We are an advocacy organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty. We do this by encouraging people to learn and take action on our platform; those actions apply pressure on world leaders to make commitments around the issues associated with extreme poverty: gender equality, food security, education, the environment, global health, citizenship, and sanitation. We don't ask people for money, but to take action for the world’s poor. These actions can be as simple as a tweet, signing a petition, making a phone call, or sending an email. By taking action, these Global Citizens are rewarded with access and tickets to our music festivals and other events around the world. So far, more than 13 million actions have been taken by Global Citizens, leading to $35 billion commitments being made by world leaders, which are set to affect 1.3 billion lives by 2030.

At the recent “Global Citizen NOW: Johannesburg” summit, Harith participated as a presenting partner, contributing to key discussions on Africa’s development priorities. During the SURA Pledging Segment, Harith committed to scaling its energy generation portfolio from 1.5 gigawatts to a projected 5 gigawatts in the coming years. This expansion is aimed at strengthening energy access, supporting industrial growth and advancing community level development across the continent. Reflecting on this commitment, Sipho Makhubela, CEO of Harith General Partners, emphasised that “Behind the numbers, it is people. When we do what we do, we do not leave anyone behind. We are not here asking for aid, we are asking for partnerships. The objective is to ensure African economies have the adequate energy to industrialise so that businesses can grow and communities can look ahead with confidence.” He also noted that strong partnerships are built on clear policy direction and robust blended finance support, which help unlock projects that may otherwise struggle to reach viability. “Global Citizen NOW” is a policy and investment convening dedicated to accelerating Africa’s energy transition. The SURA pledge brings together governments, multilaterals and regional investors to drive coordinated action toward more reliable and sustainable energy systems. It is an honour to have Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka supporting the Global Solidarity Report 2025, which was presented during Global Citizen Now Johannesburg, on the margins of the #G20. "The Global Solidarity Report 2025 arrives at a critical moment, rightly stating that the climate crisis is a solidarity crisis. It does not shy away from the truth: progress has stalled because solidarity is weakening, and emissions continue to rise. Yet it also shows that in a world where solidarity is weak, concrete actions can reverse this trajectory, including new alliances of responsible governments, and communities of citizens and businesses leading by example through collective commitment. The path forward exists; we must choose to walk it." Read her foreword setting out why those working to scale up renewables in Africa and deliver a just transition must pay close attention to the state of global solidarity and how our climate actions can and must rebuild it.
