I am pleased to share that I recently attended the Association of Certified Sanctions Specialists UAE Chapter event hosted by Covington & Burling LLP on 20 November, which proved to be one of the most insightful and well-curated compliance sessions this year. The event featured Lanny Breuer, Vice Chair of Covington and former Assistant Attorney General for the U.S. Department of Justice – Criminal Division, as well as Benjamin Haley, Partner and Head of Covington’s Compliance & Investigations Practice for the Middle East & Africa. The discussion addressed several significant themes shaping today’s global regulatory environment, including: - Emerging developments in export controls and sanctions enforcement - Shifting priorities of international regulators, particularly the increasing role of national security considerations - Recent trends in FCPA enforcement and global anti-corruption expectations - Practical approaches to governance, documentation, technology utilisation, and strengthening ERP-driven compliance controls The session reinforced the importance of anticipating regulatory expectations, ensuring transparency in internal processes, and building strong, well-documented compliance frameworks. Hearing from Ben Haley provided valuable clarity on cross-border compliance investigations, especially in the context of emerging markets. A special acknowledgement goes to Lanny Breuer, whose distinguished background and leadership in the compliance and white-collar space made the session particularly impactful. I had the opportunity to attend the session alongside my colleagues, Michael Mulcahy and Jonny Bell from LexisNexis Risk Solutions.
