The future of construction is being built at SDSU. The SDSU College of Engineering has received a $4.5M NSF award to launch SCIBER-CT (Smart Construction, Infrastructure, and Buildings through Education, Research, and Cutting-edge Technology). This program will integrate AI, robotics, and immersive technologies into construction education to address critical workforce and productivity challenges. The project is led by PI Reza Akhavian (Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering) with co-PIs Christopher Paolini and Junfei Xie (Electrical and Computer Engineering), and Zahra Nili Ahmadabadi, PhD (Mechanical Engineering). Akhavian expects to use the 2025-26 academic year for planning, with the first cohort of students recruited in the following year for an 18-unit certificate program. The master’s program would come later, around 2029 or 2030. The award is one of the largest ever to SDSU from the NSF. 🔗 Learn more: SDSU NewsStory: https://lnkd.in/g4etWYcG KPBS: https://lnkd.in/g6HEN-G5 Photo: Adobe Stock #FutureOfConstruction #NSFGrant #SDSUEngineers #AztecEngineers #SDSUInnovation #SDSUR1

For Emma Rydeen (’25), pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering at San Diego State University was more than a personal goal, it was a family legacy. Her father, Raab Rydeen (’95), is a proud SDSU Civil Engineering alumnus who helped guide her journey every step of the way. When Emma was selecting courses, Raab had one strong recommendation: take a class with Professor Bruce Urquhart. That advice made a lasting impact. Emma’s story is a powerful example of mentorship, tradition, and the lasting influence of dedicated educators like recently retired Professor Urquhart. We’re proud to celebrate the incredible success of the College of Engineering's Senior Design Day, held on May 7 at Viejas Arena! This year marked our largest event to date, nearly 90 innovative capstone projects from all four departments at the College of Engineering. Student teams worked up to nine months on assignments to help them prepare for careers as professional engineers. Many projects from previous years have gone into production and earned patents. We also welcomed a record-breaking 2,400 attendees, including industry partners, alumni, faculty, community members, and local high school students. The energy, collaboration, and support from everyone who joined us made the day unforgettable. A huge congratulations to our graduating seniors! Your hard work and dedication were on full display, and we can’t wait to see what you accomplish next! #SeniorDesignDay #Innovation #StudentSuccess #STEM #FutureEngineers #SDSUEngineers #engineeringprojects #engineering #innovation #engineeringinnovation #engineeringsolutions #mechanicalengineering #civilengineering #environmentalengineering #constructionengineering #aerospace #electricalengineering #computerengineering
