What does it take for a bank to help drive a nation’s clean energy transition? For the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), the journey began early. In 2008, the bank launched its Sustainable Energy Finance team to help ensure that environmentally aligned projects were both technically sound and financially viable. In our latest Meet the Members series, we sat down with Eric Luchangco, BPI’s Chief Sustainability Officer & CFO, to hear how that early move set the tone for BPI’s approach today. BPI has also contributed to pioneering initiatives, including the world’s first Energy Transition Financing Facility (ETFF), supporting the country’s broader energy transition and sector development. 📘 Insights from the newly launched Taxonomy Roadmap Initiative Progress Report. This progress report showcases rapid growth and innovation in sustainable finance taxonomies worldwide: ✅ Over 60 taxonomies have been launched or are in development, with many sharing similar structures and objectives—supporting high-level interoperability. Yet, achieving interoperability at the granular criteria level remains technically complex due to differing methodologies and data gaps. ✅ Taxonomy implementation is still in its early stages, especially in emerging markets. Mandatory applications are rare, and successful adoption requires ongoing support and capacity building. ✅ The use of taxonomies is expanding fast: sustainable debt issuance aligned with taxonomies has surpassed $6 trillion, with annual issuance exceeding $670 billion. ✅ Taxonomies are converging in coverage of climate mitigation, adaptation, biodiversity, and social objectives. ✅ Enhanced coordination and collaboration among partners is critical for global interoperability and evolving taxonomy use. The insights from this report echo the Alliance’s commitment to scaling green finance, building market capacity, and supporting sustainable growth that generates new jobs and opportunities across emerging markets.
