When you start chasing clean and useful data as you try to make AI work it leads to...Service Design? Indeed, this is true. Unfortunately, Service Design is one of those esoteric disciplines where some people will unironically say things like: "For AI to work, you must attain continuous orchestration of interdependent experiential, operational, and relational signal flows—structured to align perceptional architectures, behavioral feedback mechanisms, and procedural touchpoints into a unified, self-correcting ecosystem of value realization" Then they hand you a diagram that looks like a Salvador Dali version of the New York City subway map. What they should say is "Create, collect and use well-organized data at every point of customer interaction, so AI can learn how to get out of the way." Are we now building products upside down? Traditional design hierarchy said: Function first, delight later. Make it work, make it fast, then make it beautiful. Maslow's pyramid for products. But we're seeing something fascinating with our newer clients - AI has completely inverted this: Foundation (used to be Top): Emotional resonance Does it spark joy, curiosity, or surprise? Our most successful clients are leading with this. Middle: Contextual intelligence Does it feel like it knows the user? Not their data but their situation, their intent, their unstated needs. Top (used to be Foundation): Basic functionality Does it work? Almost trivial to achieve now - any developer can spin up "working" features with AI assistance in hours. When everyone can build functional products in a weekend, when AI can generate any feature you describe, when the technical barriers have evaporated - what's left? The feeling. The vibe.
