People said that maths all happens after you finish university as you teach other mathematicians. Obviously not. You just go straight to GCHQ judging by some of the crazy encryption and algorithms that have come out over the years.
It's fair that Ellis, Cocks and Williamson have their work recognised, but it's still used today for online transactions because Diffie, Hellman, Rivest, Shamir, and Adelman did independent work and made it public.
