FAQ Friday: Ever wondered why the Iridium network called Iridium, and it’s not just because it sounds cool? The reason is the original plan was for 77 satellites to be launched, matching the atomic number of Iridium, before it was refined to 66. Thankfully the Iridium marketing team stuck with the original name rather than change it to Dysprosium! But before you grab your Iridium and head for the hills (or the middle of the ocean), here’s what you should know even satellites have their limits: A clear view of the sky is essential. - If you can’t see the sky, your satellite device can’t see the satellite. Roofs, tunnels, forests, or nearby buildings will block the signal completely. Don’t believe the Hollywood version. - When you see the US President making a flawless satellite call from a concrete bunker in White House Down, that’s pure fiction. In reality, satellite phones don’t work underground or inside reinforced structures. Weather can interfere. - Heavy rain, snow, or solar activity can degrade performance. Limited bandwidth. - Ideal for voice calls and short data bursts not for video or high-speed data. At Vismo, we support Iridium devices to ensure reliable connectivity when cellular networks aren’t available. Whether you’re using the Vismo App or an Iridium device, locations appear seamlessly in the Vismo Portal, and SOS alerts are handled in exactly the same way. It’s not every day you get to share the same physical and mental space as your friends, partners, and fellow pioneers – all driven by the mission to bring standards-based satellite communication to the commercial masses. That – and much more – was discussed, dreamed of, and shared over the two days of Space Conference 2025 in Denmark. For Gatehouse Satcom and our friends at Space Connect North, the event brought fantastic news – including the announcement that AAU will establish Europe’s most advanced facilities for research and education within space technology. Meanwhile, Christina Egelund revealed that the Danish government will invest 2.7 billion DKK ($420 million) in the space sector over the next four years. Our own VP Commercial, Jesper Noer, gave a presentation and joined a panel debate moderated by Professor Petar Popovski. Together with representatives from the satellite connectivity industry, the panel explored topics such as the future of 5G NTN, the interplay between new and established space technologies, and the European perspective – represented by Jaime Ferragut, Ph.D. from IRIS², the EU’s upcoming satellite constellation. Space Conference 2025 once again demonstrated that Denmark has real momentum in space – and that collaboration across industry, research, and policy is the key to staying on course for the future. #spaceconference2025 #iris2 #3gpp #satcom #gatehousesatcom #aauspace #spaceconnectnorth

Recently attended the #NetworkX in Paris, and one of the Mobile Services sessions was about the SES and Lynk Global partnership. I believe that the collaboration between SES and Lynk Global marks a pivotal moment in the technical evolution of Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) — bringing together the strengths of multi-orbit infrastructure and direct-to-device (D2D) innovation. From an engineering standpoint, this collaboration merges: 🔹 Lynk’s LEO “cell-tower-in-space” technology, which connects standard smartphones using existing MNO spectrum, and 🔹 SES Satellites’ GEO and MEO assets, ground network, and inter-orbit integration capabilities, which provide backhaul, traffic aggregation, and carrier-grade service orchestration. This multi-orbit synergy solves several key technical challenges that have limited NTN scalability: - Control-plane and session continuity across terrestrial, LEO, and MEO domains - Dynamic backhaul routing and traffic aggregation through SES’s ground gateways - Optimized latency and link management leveraging SES’s O3b mPOWER MEO layer - Spectrum coordination and regulatory compliance, where SES’s operator relationships streamline MNO integration and trials Ultimately, this partnership represents more than business alignment — it’s a system-level integration of orbits, protocols, and ground systems that moves NTN from experimental to operational. As engineers, this is the kind of collaboration that redefines our technical landscape — where multi-orbit networks, spectrum discipline, and direct-to-device connectivity converge to close the world’s last coverage gaps. We’re excited to share the latest Real Wireless independent study report by Dr. Abhaya Sumanasena, Head of Policy and Regulation, and Wireless Technology Expert, Julius Robson, for the UK Spectrum Policy Forum, launched yesterday at techUK, exploring the rapidly evolving landscape of satellite-to-device (D2D) connectivity and non-terrestrial networks (NTN). The study covers: 🌐 Satellite D2D for billions: The evolution of satellite technologies and LEO mega constellations is revitalising satellite D2D connectivity. 🤝 Partnerships and standards: Market entry has been shaped by various partnership models, defined by air interface and spectrum. ⚙️ Standards challenges: The NTN standards roadmap tackles key challenges like Doppler effects, delay, and mobility for terrestrial network integration. 📶 Spectrum trade-offs: 3GPP’s assessment of IMT-2020 satellite rural area capacity suggests 2 × 30 MHz of spectrum is needed for NTN. 🔍 Regulatory focus: Despite growing demand, finding new spectrum for MSS remains a major challenge. This study provides a comprehensive view of the opportunities, technical challenges, and regulatory considerations shaping the future of satellite D2D connectivity. Building Spain’s FSOC Community: Reflections from the First Wireless Laser Communication Workshop Last week, the Optical Communications team at INDRA and I had the pleasure of participating in the First Workshop on Next-Generation Wireless Laser Communication, brilliantly organized by FYLA Laser and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC). It was an inspiring event — not only because of the quality of the presentations, but because it gathered, for the first time, many of the Spanish research groups and companies working in the field of Free-Space Optical Communications (FSOC). The limited number of participants created a very open and collaborative atmosphere, making it easy to exchange ideas, build connections, and explore future synergies. For a country like Spain, where much of the technological fabric is driven by small and medium-sized companies, this kind of interaction is essential to tackle major challenges together. At Indra, we contributed our vision of the future of optical communications in tactical and defense networks, and I had the opportunity to present our work and perspective on how FSOC will enable the next generation of secure, high-capacity connectivity. I’m very grateful for the invitation and the chance to contribute to this discussion. The workshop concluded with an unforgettable visit to the Teide Observatory, guided by Luis Fernando Rodríguez from the IAC, who showed us the ESA Optical Ground Station, the Carlos Sánchez telescope, and the QUIJOTE experiment. We also had the chance to visit local companies such as Wooptix, and to see firsthand their impressive work for the semiconductor industry. A great event, and hopefully the first of many that will help strengthen the FSOC community in Spain. #FSOC, #Spanish_community, #Networking
