There is a reason why the American startup ecosystem is thriving while the European startup ecosystem is stagnating that hasn't been talked about enough. Lack of Customer Feedback. Customer feedback is the lifeblood of a tech startup. It's how we get better. Y Combinator says "build things that people want". The only way you can know what people want is by getting their feedback. We've been doing a lot of business in the UK lately. Here's our usual feedback loop with an American Customer vs. a British Customer: American Customer: "Hey Sonny, sorry to inform you, we've decided to go with your competitor." Me: "Totally respect your decision. Any chance you'd be willing to share some feedback on where we fell short?" American Customer: "Sure, we felt that your dashboard wasn't as user-friendly, they also have Feature A which we really needed but you guys don't, and they also have integrations with B and C which makes our lives way easier. Happy to get on a call to talk through" Me: *behind the scenes furiously huddling with the engineering team and product teams to discuss feedback and bumping up prioritization in product roadmap" British Customer: "Hey, we've decided to go with your competitor" Me: "Totally respect your decision. Any chance you'd be willing to share some feedback on where we fell short?" British Customer: *completely ghost* Me: 🥲 Startups can't build things that the market wants unless we get feedback when we fail. Now, these are my personal experiences, but if this is what European startups are broadly experiencing with their customers, they will never, ever be able to catch up to their American counterparts.

🏃♀️➡️ Why does building a startup feel like running in place? Because the tools you're using are a treadmill, not a rocket ship. The modern startup stack creates the illusion of progress: 👉 You're "learning" from YC videos, but not implementing. 👉 You're "building" with cheap freelancers, but creating tech debt. 👉 You're "networking" in communities, but not building real traction. This is activity, not achievement. The system sells you pieces, knowing that you'll fail to assemble them into a coherent whole. The market doesn't reward assembly skills.
