This strategy, prepared by the Ministry of Planning and Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia with technical support from the UNFCCC and its Regional Collaboration Centre (RCC), sets a clear pathway for climate finance, private sector engagement, and investment in nature-based solutions. As a company dedicated to developing and implementing Nature-Based Carbon Projects, we are thrilled to witness this important step. This is a powerful signal for scaling afforestation, reforestation, and ecosystem restoration projects that deliver both climate impact and community benefits. I’m proud to share UNHCR’s first Climate Action Results Report for 2024 🙌 This report highlights the progress achieved across more than 40 countries where UNHCR is addressing the growing impacts of the climate crisis on forcibly displaced people and their host communities. From emergency responses to extreme weather events, to resilience-building initiatives and greener operations, the report reflects how resilience is becoming a cornerstone of our protection work. Our goal is not only to deliver results, but to make them self-sustaining — empowering communities and systems to withstand future shocks. The urgency of this work is evident. In South Sudan, devastating floods are affecting thousands. Climate change acts as a risk multiplier, especially in fragile settings where UNHCR and partners operate. At Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), every project is built on a 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐯𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐜𝐡 to ensure that climate resilience is meaningful, impactful, and sustainable. 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐡 𝐀𝐬𝐢𝐚 #CAREforSA project 2020–2025, adopted similar approach to foster cross-ministerial coordination. In Pakistan, the 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐨-𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 of knowledge products began with structured stakeholder engagement, comprising bilateral meetings, joint working groups, and multi-stakeholder consultations. These engagements provided a platform to identify both shared and ministry-specific challenges in climate planning and finance. 𝐊𝐞𝐲 𝐛𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐬 included a limited understanding of climate finance mechanisms across departments, the need to 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫𝐬 into government proposal development processes (such as PC-1 forms), insufficient institutional capacity to access international climate funds, gaps in localized climate adaptation planning, and the absence of systems for tracking climate-tagged budgets. In response to these challenges, a collaborative roadmap was developed, outlining priority interventions for implementation. During the initial two years of the project, these interventions were piloted, monitored, and subsequently re-evaluated based on lessons learned, emerging needs, and operational gaps. African Development Bank Approves $500 Million Climate Resilience Loan for Sahel Nations The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved a $500 million climate resilience package for Sahel nations, including Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. The financing aims to mitigate the severe impacts of droughts, floods, and desertification that have crippled agricultural production in the region. AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina said the initiative will finance solar-powered irrigation systems, water retention projects, and reforestation programs to restore degraded ecosystems. “We are investing in the people of the Sahel in food, water, and hope,” he declared. The project will also support women farmers and youth-led agribusinesses to enhance local economic participation. Development partners, including the Green Climate Fund, are expected to co-finance portions of the initiative. Regional governments welcomed the decision, describing it as timely given the rising humanitarian and food insecurity challenges. Officials project that over 15 million people could benefit from improved access to clean water and sustainable agriculture. Experts believe that AfDB’s investment could serve as a model for climate adaptation financing in other vulnerable African regions, helping to build resilience and long-term environmental stability.

Africa’s climate future begins where resilience is most needed — on the farm. With agriculture employing over 60% of Africa’s workforce, the sector sits at the heart of the continent’s climate agenda. The Africa Climate Summit and Addis Ababa Declaration have set in motion a new framework focused on adaptation, innovation, and financing African-led solutions. Initiatives like the Africa Climate Innovation Compact, designed to mobilise $50 billion annually, signal a shift from dependency toward self-determined, sustainable growth. As Africa heads toward COP30, the message is clear: climate resilience must translate into tangible outcomes for farmers, women, and youth across the continent. By integrating climate-smart agriculture, promoting equitable finance, and scaling proven local solutions, Africa is reshaping its climate narrative — one rooted in capability, dignity, and shared prosperity. Mitigation priorities include: ⚡ 75% renewable electricity by 2035 and 150 MW of new clean energy 🌲 Reducing deforestation by 10% and adding 200,000 ha of protected areas 🚍 Introducing 2,000 electric three-wheelers 🌾 Climate-smart agriculture with 60% reduction in chemical fertilizers ♻️ Recover 70% of landfill gas and expand composting Adaptation priorities include: 🏝️ Green-grey infrastructure along 60% of the coastline 💧 100 farmer field schools and climate resilient water and #WASH systems in vulnerable communities 🏥 Climate-smart health facilities and early warning systems for climate-related diseases 🐟 Two marine protected areas and support for smallholder aquaculture NDC development was led by the Environmental Protection Agency, engaging ministries, civil society, youth, women’s groups, academia, the private sector and youth.
