Queen Mary University of London has launched Procyon Diagnostics, a new spinout focused on transforming early cancer detection. Backed by an oversubscribed pre-seed round led by Queen Mary and Source BioScience, Procyon’s first product, PancRISK, will launch in early 2026. Developed by Professor Tatjana Crnogorac-Jurcevic at Queen Mary’s Barts Cancer Institute (Queen Mary University of London), PancRISK uses machine learning to analyse biomarkers from blood and urine, offering a more accurate, non-invasive way to detect pancreatic cancer early. CellBxHealth teams up with Roche in cancer testing breakthrough: CelLBxHealth PLC (AIM:CLBX, NSX:ANPCY) has unveiled early results from a study that links its cancer cell detection technology with Roche’s widely used diagnostic equipment, a step that could make blood-based cancer testing easier to integrate into hospital laboratories. The Guildford-based company, which focuses on analysing circulating tumour cells, live cancer cells that break away from tumours and travel in the bloodstream, presented its findings at the World ADC Conference in San Diego, the leading global event for antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). The proof-of-concept study showed that CellBxHealth’s Parsortix platform is compatible with Roche’s BenchMark ULTRA automated staining system. This system, a mainstay of hospital pathology labs, can process up to 95 patient samples a minute roughly 50 million a year, and is used worldwide to analyse tissue samples for disease markers. Andrew Vickers Ph.D., of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, writing in a New England Journal of Medicine editorial, described the controversy: “Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening for prostate cancer remains the great exception. Since first becoming available nearly four decades ago, PSA testing has been mired in controversy. With minor exceptions, there are no national PSA screening programs, yet PSA testing has been widely implemented in clinical practice. Most older men in high-income countries have had a PSA test, and in some countries, the number of PSA tests ordered each year far outweighs the number that would be given as a result of population-based screening.”

Recent findings indicate that metastatic melanoma cells in lymph nodes depend on the protein FSP1 to evade ferroptosis, a form of cell death caused by lipid oxidation. Targeting FSP1 with specific inhibitors significantly reduced tumor growth in vivo, while showing limited effects in vitro. This research highlights the importance of tissue context in cancer cell survival mechanisms and suggests that FSP1 inhibitors could represent a promising therapeutic strategy for metastatic cancers. The study also underscores the need to consider the unique vulnerabilities of cancer cells as they adapt to different environments during disease progression.
