The UAE’s Office of Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications has announced a major milestone in culturally aligned technology. Google Gemini ranked first in the world’s first “AI in the Ring” Index, a benchmark designed to measure how well AI language models reflect Emirati culture, dialects, values, and national identity. Officials revealed that Gemini secured the top position after experts reviewed more than 400 questions and 5,200 responses from 11 global AI models. A specialized Emirati committee evaluated each model’s cultural understanding across key areas such as history, creative writing, Emirati Arabic, social norms, symbols, and religious topics. Following Gemini 2.5 Pro, the Office reported that the next high-performing models included ChatGPT (OpenAI GPT-4o), ChatGPT (OpenAI o1), Cohere, and Grok. H.E. Omar Sultan AlOlama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, emphasized that national identity remains central to the UAE’s digital transformation. He highlighted that emerging technologies must preserve heritage, deepen cultural awareness, and grow from the nation’s authentic roots. This initiative comes at a critical time, with less than 5% of Arabic content available online and nearly 48% of Gen Z relying on AI for information.
