From Emerging Market to Tech Powerhouse: My Journey in Mexico

🇲🇽 From a Distant Memory to a Thriving Tech Powerhouse When I joined SPAN Digital in 2021 to build a Technology Competency Center in Mexico, I didn’t know what to expect. I had left Mexico in 1991 to study Computer Science, back when the country had virtually no software industry. My only real connection was that I was born there, had friends and family, and spoke Spanish. Three decades later, I returned to find a country that had quietly reinvented itself. What I discovered was not just a talent pool; it was a robust and vibrant technology ecosystem. Today, Mexico is home to over 700,000 IT professionals, 1,000+ tech companies in Jalisco alone, and a software market worth over USD 9 billion, growing at nearly 10% annually. Guadalajara, now known as the Silicon Valley of Mexico is fueling this momentum with startups, innovation labs, and global partnerships. But what truly struck me wasn’t just the numbers, it was the mindset. Mexican engineers are curious, ambitious, and globally aware. They don’t just build software; they drive digital transformation across industries from fintech to manufacturing. Building that Competency Center became one of the most rewarding experiences of my career, not only for what we achieved technically, but because it reconnected me with a country that had transformed beyond recognition. What was once an emerging market is now an innovation partner, and I believe Mexico’s best tech chapters are still being written. 👉 If you’re exploring the idea of opening operations or expanding your technology presence in Mexico, feel free to contact me — I’d be happy to share insights from the journey.
